The month of August is one of
the rare months that has no
National holidays that are
observed. This does not mean
that there are no observances
for the month. Actually there
are many-observances some as
obscure as National Creamsicle
Day or National Sneak
Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s
Porch Day. Funny right? Don’t
knock it unless you have grown
zucchini, you will not under-
stand how much of this tasty
squash you will be desperate to
get rid of! It grows abundantly
and much faster than you can
harvest.
Some of the observances Army
Community Service (ACS) is
particularly interested in fit
nicely with our mission to
August Observances and ACS...
activities. In July we hosted
Family movie days, crafting
activities and day trips. For
the month of August we
have many activities planned
to strengthen Family bonds
as well as provide fun activi-
ties for our children to do
before school starts again.
Each week there are two to
three activities scheduled
that will culminate with an
end of summer bash! For
information or to register
you and your child for a
specific activity call
772-0819, 772-5914 or
772-5374.

support Soldiers and Families here
on Fort Drum. For instance, did
you know that 15 August through
21 August is National Aviation
Week? For Families of our 10
CAB, our prayers are with you
and your Soldiers, not just this
week but through out the deploy-
ment. We offer support before
and after deployment in the form
of pre deployment fairs, reintegra-
tion briefs, Hearts Apart Support
Group, Military Family Life
Consultants, stress management,
Master Resilience classes and
many more programs designed to
support your resilience and overall
well being.
The month of August is National
Family Fun Month. This summer
ACS has planned and
implemented many fun Family

The Honorable John McHugh
Secretary of the U.S. Army
I am pleased to open this quarter’s
newsletter* by placing the spotlight
where it belongs: on you – our Army’s
Master Resilience Trainers. As our sub-
ject matter experts in resilience, you
have the ability to drive the cultural
change called for in our Ready and
Resilient Campaign. Working from the
local level with the full support of your
senior leaders, you play a crucial role in
today’s Army, and I am extremely
proud of the hard work you are doing
to bolster our Comprehensive Soldier
and Family Fitness.
In March, I formally established
through Army Directive 2013-07
Comprehensive Soldier and Family
Fitness (CSF2) as a key component of
the Ready and Resilient Campaign. The
Ready and Resilient Campaign
integrates resilience training as an
integral part of the Army’s professional
military education throughout a Soldier’s
career from induction through separation
or retirement. CSF2 is vital to developing
a Total Army team of physically healthy
and psychologically strong Soldiers, Civil-
ians and Families whose total fitness en-
ables them to meet the Army’s mission.
I look to our Master Resilience Trainers
to serve as the Commanders’ advisors for
this important training.
Let me share some promising news with
you: CSF2 recently completed Technical
Report #4, which found that over time,
units with Master Resilience Trainers had
significantly lower rates of diagnoses for
substance abuse (drug and alcohol abuse)
and for mental health problems (anxiety,
depression and post-traumatic stress
disorder) compared to units without
Master Resilience Trainers. This tells us
that what you do each day to improve the
total fitness of our personnel makes a
marked difference.
CSF2 Training Centers bring a decisive
component of the Ready and Resilient
Campaign to where it is needed the most
– at Army installations. And as more
CSF2 Training Centers are established at
installations across the country, we will
have increased opportunities to engage
our Soldiers, Civilians, and Families.
CSF2 Training Centers are a critical tool
for local Commanders to train their own
Master Resilience Trainers and provide
local subject matter expertise that is vital
to maintaining and improving a Ready
and Resilient Army.
Building and sustaining resilience is a
fundamental part of the Army profes-
sion and is a key component of readi-
ness. Our Army’s Master Resilience
Trainers have my appreciation for your
contributions to making us Army
Strong! *(Article taken from: http://
csf2.army.mil/ CSF2 Newsletter, 4th
issue)
Have a great month! Good luck and
good thoughts!
If you would like to get signed up to
take or retake trainings to enhance your

Going to a Career Fair? Take a Minute to Get Prepared
Your 30 Second Commercial
What is a 30 second commercial? - it is
your personal “commercial” and your
chance to sell yourself. I is the answer
to the question, “Tell me about your-
self ?” It should include the following:
 Self introduction
 Summery of experience
 Defined strength or skill
 Follow that with an accomplish-
ment
 Employment goal
 Most importantly, examples of
how you can benefit the company
Career fairs are an opportunity to find
employment, not a guarantee. Remem-
ber just with anything else in life, suc-
cess most often depends on hard work,
commitment and preparation. If you
need assistance finding a job, contact
Employment Readiness for assistance
and the tools you need to succeed!
Know yourself and be able to discuss
your skills .
 Try to identify specific experiences
where you have demonstrated your
strengths.
 Backing up your skills with specific
examples makes you a much stronger
candidate.
 Be able to express why you want to
work for the organization; if you
can’t tell them why, why would they
hire you?
 Prepare a list of questions for the
representatives.
 Practice your questions a few times
so you are able to speak them in a
natural voice.
 Prepare and organize your docu-
ments, transcripts, resumes and net-
working cards. Bring enough to give
to the company representatives.
 Put all of your papers and documents
in a folder. Look and be organized!
 Remember to take a pen so you can
take notes.
 Be prepared to deliver your 30
second commercial.
Walking into a job fair can be
overwhelming and even a bit
intimidating. For some job seekers,
the confusion and noise teamed with
the sight of so many people can make
the whole experience somewhat
daunting. To ensure your experience
is positive and you get the most from
the event, try to pre-plan a specific
agenda for how you will work the job
fair once you have arrived. The
following tips will help you
successfully navigate your next career
fair:
 Do some research to determine
which employers will be repre-
sented at the job fair.
 Research the companies you are
interested in and gather informa-
tion you can talk about.
 Write targeted cover letters for the
companies you are interested in
based on the information you
gather, your letters will have a
greater impact if they are not ge-
neric letters.
 Be prepared to ask questions of
the representatives.

After the Job Fair….What to do Next
Recruiters receive many resumes and talk to large numbers of job seekers during job fairs. It is a good idea to follow up on
your initial contact to ensure you stand out among the candidates the representatives have spoken with.
1. Follow up, enthusiasm and positive attitude are the keys to standing out
2. Sort through notes, brochures and business cards to plan your strategy
3. Follow up with a thank you card, email, or call if the representative gave you a business number. If you send an e- mail
or letter, don’t forget to attach your resume
4. Reconfirm your interest and remind the recruiter how you met
5. Reiterate how qualified you are
6. Make follow up phone calls immediately following the fair and again two to three weeks later to ask if interviews are
being set, but don’t become overbearing.
7. Prepare for the possibility of an interview
8. Evaluate the job fair, what went well for you, what did not, what do you want to work on next time?

Tanya has been a military spouse for
over eighteen years. She and her
husband, SFC Clayton Dockery, met in
Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Tanya was an
Army Reservist and Clay was on Active
Duty. It was love at first sight. Five
weeks later the two were married! Today
they are the proud parents of four
beautiful children: Casey (18), Corey
(16), Caitlyn (2) and Carter (2
months).
As an Army wife, Tanya has had the
opportunity to grow both personally and
professionally. Her husband's career has
taken them to various locations such as
Fort Hood, TX, Schweinfurt and Mann-
heim, Germany, Fort Lee, VA and now
to Fort Drum. "Every post has been
both an opportunity to reflect back
and to move forward." At each location,
Tanya has used her talents to volunteer.
Over the years, she has served in many
positions such as an Army
Building Community–
Tanya Dockery Spouse in the Spotlight
Family Team Building Master Trainer, an
FRG Leader, a Girl Scout Leader and
Board Member, an actress in several
community theaters, a religious
education volunteer, a Red Cross medical
records volunteer, a Cub Scout
volunteer, a member of the Spouses' Club,
a Board Member of the Parent
Teacher Organization, and many others.
Her favorite volunteer position has
been when she served as a member of the
School Advisory Council for her
children's elementary school. As an elected
member of the board, she had
direct input on the policies affected her
children's education.
Being a volunteer changed her life!
Because she enjoyed this work so much,
Tanya decided to return to school and
become an elementary school teacher.
With the assistance of an AER
Educational Grant, Tanya completed her
Bachelor's degree. She later completed her
Master's degree and began working
on a post-bachelor's program in
curriculum and instruction. Tanya became
an elementary school teacher in Texas and
earned several awards including a national
teaching award. She taught in the Killeen
Independent School District until her
husband PCS'ed to Fort Drum.
Today, as a Parenting Skills Educator at
ACS, Tanya shares the skills she has
learned . She teaches life skills classes such
as stress management,
anger management, and conflict
resolution. She also teaches a great class
called "The Fourth Trimester" that
teaches new parents how to calm
even the fussiest of babies. She loves
having the opportunity to share ideas
with other military spouses.
Tanya has some great advice for
other military spouses. She says that
the key to success at any post is to
think like a local. She says that the
best thing you can do is to get out of
the house and enjoy the things that
the locals enjoy. Don't always take
the beaten path. Be open to new
places and ideas. "Every post is as
good as you make it!. " she said, "My
favorite thing about the North
Country is the wonderful fresh
produce available at the Farmer's
Markets. If you haven't visited one
yet, give it a try! You will thank me!"
“A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and trans-
form.” ~Diane Mariechild

ACS Summer Activities Guide

  • 1. ACS Green Press Army Community Service (ACS) Fort Drum, August 2013 Regarding Resilience: Tips, tools and techniques for practicing resil- ience everyday! 2 Going to a Career Fair? Take a Minute to get Prepped 3 Summer Fun With ACS 4, 5 On the Payroll 6 To do Around Town 7 ACS events and Programming 8 Contact information 9 Inside this issue: ~A tree free newsletter Direct questions / feedback To: Sarah Lynch : 772-5374 sarah.l.lynch@us.army.mil The month of August is one of the rare months that has no National holidays that are observed. This does not mean that there are no observances for the month. Actually there are many-observances some as obscure as National Creamsicle Day or National Sneak Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. Funny right? Don’t knock it unless you have grown zucchini, you will not under- stand how much of this tasty squash you will be desperate to get rid of! It grows abundantly and much faster than you can harvest. Some of the observances Army Community Service (ACS) is particularly interested in fit nicely with our mission to August Observances and ACS... activities. In July we hosted Family movie days, crafting activities and day trips. For the month of August we have many activities planned to strengthen Family bonds as well as provide fun activi- ties for our children to do before school starts again. Each week there are two to three activities scheduled that will culminate with an end of summer bash! For information or to register you and your child for a specific activity call 772-0819, 772-5914 or 772-5374. “Think ACS First!” support Soldiers and Families here on Fort Drum. For instance, did you know that 15 August through 21 August is National Aviation Week? For Families of our 10 CAB, our prayers are with you and your Soldiers, not just this week but through out the deploy- ment. We offer support before and after deployment in the form of pre deployment fairs, reintegra- tion briefs, Hearts Apart Support Group, Military Family Life Consultants, stress management, Master Resilience classes and many more programs designed to support your resilience and overall well being. The month of August is National Family Fun Month. This summer ACS has planned and implemented many fun Family ACS Summer Activities 1 August 1-3 pm Roller Skating 6 August 1:30 pm Family Game Day 8 August 1:30 - 4:00 pm Wreck It Ralph Movie (rated PG) USO 15 August 9:30 am - 11:30 am Nature Hike 19 August 1:30 pm The Goonies (rated PG) USO 20 August 1:30 pm Outdoor Activity 22 August 1:00 - 3:00 pm Bowling Bash Pine Plains Bowling Alley 26 August 1:30 pm Judy Moody - Not so Bummer Summer (rated PG) USO 27 August 1:30 pm Ice Cream Social 29 August 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EFMP End of Summer Bash with games and activities at the EFMP Playground Pine Camp/Camp Hale Road (bring a bag lunch)
  • 2. Page 2 ACS Green Press August 2013 The Honorable John McHugh Secretary of the U.S. Army I am pleased to open this quarter’s newsletter* by placing the spotlight where it belongs: on you – our Army’s Master Resilience Trainers. As our sub- ject matter experts in resilience, you have the ability to drive the cultural change called for in our Ready and Resilient Campaign. Working from the local level with the full support of your senior leaders, you play a crucial role in today’s Army, and I am extremely proud of the hard work you are doing to bolster our Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness. In March, I formally established through Army Directive 2013-07 Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) as a key component of the Ready and Resilient Campaign. The Ready and Resilient Campaign integrates resilience training as an integral part of the Army’s professional military education throughout a Soldier’s career from induction through separation or retirement. CSF2 is vital to developing a Total Army team of physically healthy and psychologically strong Soldiers, Civil- ians and Families whose total fitness en- ables them to meet the Army’s mission. I look to our Master Resilience Trainers to serve as the Commanders’ advisors for this important training. Let me share some promising news with you: CSF2 recently completed Technical Report #4, which found that over time, units with Master Resilience Trainers had significantly lower rates of diagnoses for substance abuse (drug and alcohol abuse) and for mental health problems (anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder) compared to units without Master Resilience Trainers. This tells us that what you do each day to improve the total fitness of our personnel makes a marked difference. CSF2 Training Centers bring a decisive component of the Ready and Resilient Campaign to where it is needed the most – at Army installations. And as more CSF2 Training Centers are established at installations across the country, we will have increased opportunities to engage our Soldiers, Civilians, and Families. CSF2 Training Centers are a critical tool for local Commanders to train their own Master Resilience Trainers and provide local subject matter expertise that is vital to maintaining and improving a Ready and Resilient Army. Building and sustaining resilience is a fundamental part of the Army profes- sion and is a key component of readi- ness. Our Army’s Master Resilience Trainers have my appreciation for your contributions to making us Army Strong! *(Article taken from: http:// csf2.army.mil/ CSF2 Newsletter, 4th issue) Have a great month! Good luck and good thoughts! If you would like to get signed up to take or retake trainings to enhance your resilience, please contact Jenn Eichner, 315-772-2848 or Jenni- fer.e.eichner.civ@mail.mil Page 2 Regarding Resilience: Tips, tools and techniques for practicing resilience everyday! • 3. Page 3ACS Green Press August 2013 Going to a Career Fair? Take a Minute to Get Prepared Your 30 Second Commercial What is a 30 second commercial? - it is your personal “commercial” and your chance to sell yourself. I is the answer to the question, “Tell me about your- self ?” It should include the following:  Self introduction  Summery of experience  Defined strength or skill  Follow that with an accomplish- ment  Employment goal  Most importantly, examples of how you can benefit the company Career fairs are an opportunity to find employment, not a guarantee. Remem- ber just with anything else in life, suc- cess most often depends on hard work, commitment and preparation. If you need assistance finding a job, contact Employment Readiness for assistance and the tools you need to succeed! Know yourself and be able to discuss your skills .  Try to identify specific experiences where you have demonstrated your strengths.  Backing up your skills with specific examples makes you a much stronger candidate.  Be able to express why you want to work for the organization; if you can’t tell them why, why would they hire you?  Prepare a list of questions for the representatives.  Practice your questions a few times so you are able to speak them in a natural voice.  Prepare and organize your docu- ments, transcripts, resumes and net- working cards. Bring enough to give to the company representatives.  Put all of your papers and documents in a folder. Look and be organized!  Remember to take a pen so you can take notes.  Be prepared to deliver your 30 second commercial. Walking into a job fair can be overwhelming and even a bit intimidating. For some job seekers, the confusion and noise teamed with the sight of so many people can make the whole experience somewhat daunting. To ensure your experience is positive and you get the most from the event, try to pre-plan a specific agenda for how you will work the job fair once you have arrived. The following tips will help you successfully navigate your next career fair:  Do some research to determine which employers will be repre- sented at the job fair.  Research the companies you are interested in and gather informa- tion you can talk about.  Write targeted cover letters for the companies you are interested in based on the information you gather, your letters will have a greater impact if they are not ge- neric letters.  Be prepared to ask questions of the representatives. Employment Readiness Your one Stop Shop for employment assistance 772-1090/7987/2737/9611 “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self- confidence is preparation.” –Arthur Ashe

  • 6. Page 6ACS Green Press August 2013 Brittany – Pizza Hut & JoAnn Fabrics Stephanie - Olive Garden Tonnica - Resource Mgmt Office Candice - Philadelphia Medical Center Look Who’s on the Payroll!!! 30 second commercial script My name is ______________ I am a graduate from _________ majoring in _________________ My experience is ____________ I am (strength), which I demonstrated when I (accomplishment) I’m looking for a position where I can (Goal) I can be of immediate benefit to your company (why & how) Do you have any questions for me? After the Job Fair….What to do Next Recruiters receive many resumes and talk to large numbers of job seekers during job fairs. It is a good idea to follow up on your initial contact to ensure you stand out among the candidates the representatives have spoken with. 1. Follow up, enthusiasm and positive attitude are the keys to standing out 2. Sort through notes, brochures and business cards to plan your strategy 3. Follow up with a thank you card, email, or call if the representative gave you a business number. If you send an e- mail or letter, don’t forget to attach your resume 4. Reconfirm your interest and remind the recruiter how you met 5. Reiterate how qualified you are 6. Make follow up phone calls immediately following the fair and again two to three weeks later to ask if interviews are being set, but don’t become overbearing. 7. Prepare for the possibility of an interview 8. Evaluate the job fair, what went well for you, what did not, what do you want to work on next time?

  • 8. Page 8 ACS Green Press August 2013 Tanya has been a military spouse for over eighteen years. She and her husband, SFC Clayton Dockery, met in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Tanya was an Army Reservist and Clay was on Active Duty. It was love at first sight. Five weeks later the two were married! Today they are the proud parents of four beautiful children: Casey (18), Corey (16), Caitlyn (2) and Carter (2 months). As an Army wife, Tanya has had the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Her husband's career has taken them to various locations such as Fort Hood, TX, Schweinfurt and Mann- heim, Germany, Fort Lee, VA and now to Fort Drum. "Every post has been both an opportunity to reflect back and to move forward." At each location, Tanya has used her talents to volunteer. Over the years, she has served in many positions such as an Army Building Community– Tanya Dockery Spouse in the Spotlight Family Team Building Master Trainer, an FRG Leader, a Girl Scout Leader and Board Member, an actress in several community theaters, a religious education volunteer, a Red Cross medical records volunteer, a Cub Scout volunteer, a member of the Spouses' Club, a Board Member of the Parent Teacher Organization, and many others. Her favorite volunteer position has been when she served as a member of the School Advisory Council for her children's elementary school. As an elected member of the board, she had direct input on the policies affected her children's education. Being a volunteer changed her life! Because she enjoyed this work so much, Tanya decided to return to school and become an elementary school teacher. With the assistance of an AER Educational Grant, Tanya completed her Bachelor's degree. She later completed her Master's degree and began working on a post-bachelor's program in curriculum and instruction. Tanya became an elementary school teacher in Texas and earned several awards including a national teaching award. She taught in the Killeen Independent School District until her husband PCS'ed to Fort Drum. Today, as a Parenting Skills Educator at ACS, Tanya shares the skills she has learned . She teaches life skills classes such as stress management, anger management, and conflict resolution. She also teaches a great class called "The Fourth Trimester" that teaches new parents how to calm even the fussiest of babies. She loves having the opportunity to share ideas with other military spouses. Tanya has some great advice for other military spouses. She says that the key to success at any post is to think like a local. She says that the best thing you can do is to get out of the house and enjoy the things that the locals enjoy. Don't always take the beaten path. Be open to new places and ideas. "Every post is as good as you make it!. " she said, "My favorite thing about the North Country is the wonderful fresh produce available at the Farmer's Markets. If you haven't visited one yet, give it a try! You will thank me!" “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and trans- form.” ~Diane Mariechild
