3. Brazilwood In 1494 Spain and Portugal divided the New World between them. In 1500 navigator PedroCabral landed in what is now Brazil and laid claim to it in the name of King Manuel I of Portugal. The Portuguese soon began extracting brazilwood from the rainforest for its valuable wood and for the red dye derived from it.
4. New Trading Partners In January 1808, Prince João and his court arrived in Salvador where he signed a commercial regulation that opened commerce between Brazil and other friendly nation such as England. This important law broke the colonial pact that only allowed Brazil to maintain direct commercial relations with Portugal.
