original use of the term as a government report bound in white wrappers, the commercial white
paper is a business document that presents technology (usually not product) benefits which solve
specific problems.
Clients favor these sales/marketing communications tools as meaningful documents that make a
business case for high-level benefits of a client’s superior technology. More and more, the
anticipated outcome is lead generation. Customer education occurs through merging technical
details and benefits in a description of how the technology works and performs as a solution.
Documents that define and educate about a company’s vision or mission (thought leadership) also
meet the definition of a white paper.
Case Studies
Case Study: AT&T had a vision for a new class of device (personal communicators) or what we
today call “smart phones.” The company had developed the underlying technologies, recruited
partners, and created demonstrable product. Yet, no one had memorialized the client’s
technology vision in an easy-to-understand narrative that brought to life the need for these new
devices. Naidish responded by interviewing executives across the organization, scientists,
industry leaders, influencers, and market analysts for each group’s unique perspective. Her white
paper, including Joan’s creation of the “anytime…anywhere” mantra as defining AT&T’s vision,
became the core document used by all 36 of AT&T’s partners as the definitive reference
