The Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC) was established in 1891 to regulate railroads. Since 2005, however, it has had no transportation responsibilities. Rather, the TRRC is the primary regulator of the state’s oil and gas industry. With its obscure name and avowed role as industry champion, the TRRC is the epitome of regulatory capture and cronyism. Dr. Mark Miller, 2014 Libertarian Party nominee for Railroad Commissioner, will discuss oil and gas in Texas, the functions of the Railroad Commission, and some of the oil and gas regulatory challenges facing Texas.

Imagine! SmartHomes guru Greg Wellems presented at the 2014 Alliance Summit on “Technology COPs – An arresting presentation on how three organizations from around the country are working together to improve services and supports.” Here is a description of his presentation: COPs, or “Communities of Practice,” are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something, and work together to do it better. The session will highlight how Imagine!, New York-based Living Resources and Connecticut-based Ability Beyond are working together to improve services and supports through technology. The three organizations regularly share information and resources and have worked together to design an assessment that helps organizations identify and prioritize technologies to improve the supports they provide. Attendees will learn about this successful collaboration along with a demonstration of the assessment.

Imagine!’s SmartHomes were created to act as living laboratories for testing and refining technologies that can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of service provision for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and to create new opportunities for independence for those individuals. Imagine! is well into the second phase of its SmartHome project, moving technologies out of the SmartHomes and into other service areas as well as individual and family homes. Imagine!’s SmartHomes guru Greg Wellems, along with tech superstars Alex Andrews and Chris Baumgart, are sharing this presentation with Imagine! employees and others in the field, discussing how we are moving from the SmartHomes to SmartSupports.

Last night, members of Imagine!’s SmartSupports team met with representatives of The Community Life Project. The Community Life Project, a local parent-organized group, has been meeting for a year to research and plan a nonprofit housing cooperative for adults with autism, including those who aren't eligible for developmental disability services or who are on a waiting list, and those who receive services but need more support. The two groups met to discuss how technology could be used in the projected housing. Here’s an outline of what they discussed.

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, Imagine! SmartHomes tech guys Kevin Harding and Alex Andrews presented at the Boulder/Denver New Tech No-For-Profit night. It was a great opportunity for them to introduce Imagine!’s SmartHome project (and other tech projects Imagine! is involved in), introduce a couple of small projects that we need assistance with, recruit volunteers, and get some help/guidance from a highly technical crowd. Thanks for hosting us, BDNT!

On October 14, 2011, Imagine!’s SmartHomes guru Greg Wellems gave a presentation at the annual ANCOR Technology Conference. Greg spoke about the importance of strategically implementing technology for organizations which are looking to use technology as a way to enhance services for individuals with developmental disabilities. This was a powerful and important message to share as more and more organizations are realizing the potential that technology has to offer, but aren’t quite sure where to start. Greg’s presentation offered solutions for building a solid foundation on which to develop technology use in the DD field.

Once again, students in CU Professor Melinda Piket-May’s Engineering class will be working on projects to design some simple adaptive technologies for SmartHome residents and other individuals served by Imagine!. This has turned into a great collaboration that is mutually beneficial. Students are met with SmartHome staffers to get started and viewed this slideshow for a perspective on the population they will be creating their projects for.

On July 2, 2011, SmartHomes project manager Sterling Wind presented at the No Barriers USA Summit on “Designing for Exceptional Needs.” Sterling presented with University of Colorado Associate Professor Melinda Piket-May and students from her class who have worked on projects to design simple adaptive technologies that aid increased independence for some of the folks Imagine! serves, including some residents of our SmartHomes. This is a great example of how other organizations are seeing that the technologies we are using to serve those with developmental disabilities can be applied to those with other disabilities. Great job, Sterling and Melinda!

On March 30, 2011, Imagine! SmartHomes guru Greg Wellems and Mark Davis, President of the Ohio Provider Resource Association, presented on Remote Monitoring and Technology-Enabled Support at the Ohio Provider Resource Association 2011 Spring Conference. It is predicted that technology will fundamentally change our service delivery system over the next one to five years. In this session, participants heard about cutting edge, technology-enabled supports that are in place now, learned the status of Ohio’s request to add remote monitoring to the Individual Options waiver, developed a better understanding of the components of the remote-monitoring service as requested by Ohio, and found out how they may position their agencies to leverage this service for the betterment of those they serve.
