Assignment 1c
1. Assignment 1c:
Public service broadcasting is TV Programmes that are
broadcast for the benefit of the public instead of for
commercial reasons. These are TV programmes like
religious shows and local news. Commercial
broadcasting is when television and radio programmes
are broadcast by private corporate media. Subscription
channels are when you have to pay to watch the
channel. For example, if you have free view, you won’t
get ESPN unless you pay money to watch it.
In the UK, BBC is a public service broadcaster. They get
a license fee from everyone with a TV and in return
they provide shows that are beneficial to the audience,
for example, local news and cultural programmes. An
example of commercial broadcasting in the UK is
BSkyB; this is because they are owned by a privately
corporate media.
Public service broadcasters gain money from
audiences’ as they get a portion out of the TV licences
fee that everyone have to pay if they own a TV.
Commercial broadcasters make money out of
adverts. The advertisers pay them a fee so that their
advert can be aired on TV. Subscription channels make
2. money as the audience pay so that they could watch it.
It may be a one off subscription or a contract one; like
monthly.
License fee: All UK households that have a TV have to
pay a certain amount of money each year. Some of this
money goes to the BBC.
Pay per view: This is when a channel only show a
particular event to people only paying for it. For
example, on sky you have to pay to certain
programmes like movies on sky box office.
Sponsorship: the channel shows what sponsors their
show before and after a commercial break. For
example, many shows on E4 are sponsored by
Schwarzkopf and right guard.
Subscription: This is when you have to pay weekly,
monthly or yearly for a specific satellite. For example, if
someone was to get virgin they have to pay up to £45
monthly.
Advertising: Advertisers pay a fee to certain channels
to air their adverts during the break. They would
normally select a channel that their advert will appeal
to. For example, on CITV, ids toys are often advertised
as the audience of that channel are children.
3. The disadvantages of license fee is that everyone in the
UK who have a TV have to pay it even if they don’t
watch BBC. So it’s a waste of money to some people.
However, an advantage of it, is that it isn’t supposed to
be subjective as they are going to gain the money
anyway so they don’t have to try and impress
particular people who will fund them.
The advantages of pay per view is that people are
paying for what they watch so it’s not being forced on
them and it’s not a waste of money for them. The
disadvantage is that if a programme only have a few
people watching it then they wouldn’t gain much
money as only a small number of people are paying to
watch it.
The advantages of subscription is that if you don’t
watch for example the BBC then you wouldn’t have to
pay. Also the channel ill know who is subscribing to
them and target their shows to that specific target
audience. The disadvantage is that if BBC was a
subscription channel then their values to inform,
educate and entertain will vanish as they aren’t a
national channel anymore. Also, if you had to pay for
every channel you want then it would be expensive
and people will only stick to watching a few channels.
4. The advantages of advertising is that when a popular
programme is showing and then an advert shows it
could result in a big amount of funding. Also, it gives a
break for people to get up and do something if they
need to. A disadvantage of advertising is that there are
many channels so advertisers aren’t likely to get their
adverts on many of them as that would cost a lot of
money. Therefore, some channels may get not very
popular adverts or even no adverts at all and this could
result in a low quality of programmes.
