The identification of the real-world geographic location of an
object, such as a radar source, mobile device or any Internet-
connected computer terminals.
Internet and computer geo-locating can be performed by
associating a geographic location with the IP address, MAC
address, RFID, Wi-Fi positioning system, GPS coordinates or
other self-disclosed information.
When a GPS signal is unavailable, geo-location applications can
use information from cell towers to triangulate the
approximate position. (Not as accurate as GPS)
Geo-fencing is defining a geographic region, which when
entered, will trigger some type of action – this could be a
display ad, an in-app action or specifically tailored search
results.
Geo-conquesting is a strategy that uses geo-fencing techniques
for the purpose of marketing to customers near the
competitor’s space.
Location history of the average consumer provides a lot of
specific information about that person, which gives great
insight to marketers, enhancing the ability to target consumers
and deliver relevant ad campaigns.
