2. Youth and Mixed Gender: Both males and
females between the ages of 16-30 years old are
represented in my alternative music magazine.
Alternative/Indie: This group of people are
represented in my magazine because the genre
is alternative music, but not just the alternative
rock side of it.
Outgoing: People who are outgoing and confident
are represented by my magazine as the
idols/stars are also shown as confident and the
issues talked about can sometimes take them a
lot of confidence to express their stories, views
and opinions. Also because a lot of gigs and
festivals are advertised and usually the people at
gigs are quite energetic and confident.
3. Positively
Can be serious and fun
Confident
Caring
Connected
Happy
Kind
Enthusiastic
Respectable
4. Photography of Stars and Idols: On the front cover the star
Callum Bate is in a direct mode of address which then connects
with audience. His mise en sen is casual and cool which makes
him look friendly and approachable. With his guitar you can see
that he is musically talented and the dark colours represent the
stereotypical alternative fashion style.
Articles: The articles shows seriousness about Callum leaving the
band but doesn’t gossip about it and make judgements. Also
there is an article about how the magazine is connected to Great
Ormond Street hospital which shows that the readers are caring
as by buying this magazine they are helping charities. The word
‘friends’ has connotations of kindness, trust and positivity.
Tours and Gigs: These events denote a music atmosphere which
will be loud, crazy and fun. They have connotations of people
who are outgoing, confident and energetic. This therefore also
represents youth as these words are often associated with the
younger generation.
Narrative Style: The articles are written in a friendly, chatty but
professional way. This is aimed at the audience and reflects in
the same way.
5. I wanted to challenge the stereotype that people who
are into the alternative/indie genre of music are all
depressing, moody and only feel sorry for themselves.
I wanted to instead show that they’re caring (with
the charity association) fun and happy people who
just respect and appreciate good music. Also to
confirm some stereotypes of the crazy gigs and
festivals as you’re young and the world is still seen as
an adventure and are looking for new experiences.
The social groups all fit into this style of music and so
I needed to represent them in order for my magazine
to sell and be seen as interesting. They are the main
part of my target audience and I they deserve to be
shown in a positive light compared to the negativity
that revolves around stereotypical ‘indie’ youths in
the news.
