2. Clairvoyance is the annual signature event of the School of Health Sys-
tems Studies,Tata Institute of Social Sciences. It is a platform where thought
leaders and scholars in the field of health and healthcare come together to
contemplate, challenge, discuss, debate, learn and unlearn about topics
that are relevant today and those that will be impactful in the future. Each
year a theme is chosen to justify the meaning of the word Clairvoyance,
which refers to the power to see the future and to leave the participants
with realistic and progressive thoughts of action.
The year 2015 is a landmark year for public health and the healthcare
scenario in India and the world at large. With the December 2015 deadline
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) nearing, world leaders are
determined to take transformative steps towards transitioning into a sus-
tainable future through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This
would mean sustainability in the 3 dimensions - Social, Environmental and
Economical.
The UN has identified 17 SDGs to be achieved by the year 2030 and
among them Goal 3 -“Ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all at
all ages”- brings out the health aspect in this sustainable development par-
adigm. Under this one goal, nine targets and four means of implementa-
tion have been suggested as a roadmap towards achieving sustainability in
health. However health being a multidimensional concept, it will require
cross-referencing across all the 17 goals. There couldn't be a better time to
reflect on the achievements of the MDGs, identify gaps and attempt to
overcome them while simultaneously working towards sustainability in
health and healthcare.
Using the platform of Clairvoyance 2015 under the theme “Sustain-
ability: The Pursuit in Health and Healthcare”, we wish to explore the con-
cept of sustainability in health and healthcare globally and inquire what
this will mean for India within the context of its increasing global presence.
