3. BUSINESS MODEL
The business nature in facing real problems in the community are characterized by problem solving concern, quantitative approaches, project approach (has a start and end), triple constraint problem, S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bounded) Goals. In addition to this, Progress Reports, Deliverables, Implementation, Post Implementation Review and Evaluation must be accomplished. The core of the business model will be the utilization of Lean Manufacturing which is based on the elimination of the seven wastes; the new Value Added concept which calculates the actual benefits that have been accomplished from the viewpoint of the real customer (from the community); and the Project Management approach where there is project dynamics that deals with the project as a triple constraint problem: Time, Cost and Resources within a specific scope of quality. The best solution has to be an output introducing the imposed constraints. These approaches, in addition to other quantitative approaches, will help in solving real problems.
In order to achieve a reasonable success we suggest that the business model will be executed through four phases. Each phase will have dedicated resources with a defined goal and time frame.
All the activities related to linking community with academia through real problem solving will be accomplished within a school named ‘Operations Management and Problem Solving School’. This school will be cultivated inside the University reporting directly to the Vice President for Research and Community Service.
The school will start with small number of high cadres of consultants and expand as needed. It will represent the real pulse of the community and its requirements. Its main goal is to Bridge the Gap between University and Community.
