3. • Ireland is an Island to the north-west
of continental Europe.
• It is the third largest island in Europe.
• Politically, Ireland is divided between
the Republic of Ireland, which covers
just under five-sixths of the island,
and Northern Ireland, a part of
the United Kingdom, which covers
the remaining area and is located in
the north-east of the island.
• The population of Ireland is
approximately 6.4 million.
• Just under 4.6 million live in the
Republic of Ireland and just over
1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
4. • Ireland is situated in the
Atlantic Ocean and separated
from Great Britain by the Irish
Sea.
• Ireland resembles a basin—a
central plain rimmed with
mountains, except in the
Dublin region.
• The mountains are low, with
the highest peak, Carrantuohill
in County Kerry, rising to 3,415
ft (1,041 m). The principal river
is the Shannon, which begins in
the north-central area, flows
south and southwest for about
240 mi (386 km), and empties
into the Atlantic.
5. • The Irish War of Independence was a guerrilla war mounted against
the British government in Ireland by the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
It began in January 1919, following the Irish Republic’s declaration of
independence, and ended with a truce in July 1921. The subsequent
negotiations led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which ended British rule in
most of Ireland and established the Irish Free State. However, six
northern counties would remain under British rule.
6. Irish culture has had a significant
influence on other cultures,
especially in the fields of
literature and, to a lesser degree,
science and education. Alongside
mainstream Western culture, a
strong indigenous culture exists,
as expressed for example through
Gaelic games, Irish music, and the
Irish language. The culture of the
island has also many features
shared with Great Britain,
including the English language,
and sports such as association
football, rugby, horse racing and
golf.
