Editor's Notes
• Slide 1: Hook/attention grabber: The current homeless population in Hollywood California is estimated to be over 50,000 on any given night.
• Slide 2: Hook/attention grabber: The current homeless youth population in Hollywood is estimated to be over 7,000 with the individual ages ranging from 12 to 20.
• Slide 3: The Big Idea: If we continue to ignore the homeless population, there will be a significant rise in displaced individuals which will ultimately lead to more premature deaths in our society.
• Slide 4: What’s in it for your audience? Explain why your topic is important or worth discussing. The audience will gain the insight to the social problem that plagues our city streets. With this new information, the audience will learn how they can make a difference which has intrinsic value and will eventual make them feel like helping. This topic is worth discussing because so many lives are at stake and some of them are children.
• Slide 5: Why should your audience listen to you? Explain your ethos (personal experience, expertise, and credibility). As a former homeless youth, I have much experience with the homeless population and the struggles that exist. I have lived at the Salvation Army facility in Hollywood where I met and associated with many displaced individuals. This experience gives me insight to the problem and the solutions that exist.
• Slide 6: Call to Adventure: Taking a little more interest in your immediate environment could prove to be beneficial in many ways. For example, helping out the homeless on a regular basis will make you feel like you are committed to the community and care about the well being of society.
• Slide 7: Preview the three main points that will support your big idea: 1) Donating money to homeless organizations can help solve the hunger crisis and make you feel good about yourself. 2) Volunteering personal time to a homeless shelter can help keep administration costs down which will ultimately filter more money to the homeless residents who stay there. 3) Joining a big brother organization will allow the parentless youth to have a social interaction with someone who actually cares rather than just paid shelter staff.
• Slide 8: Introduce and set up Supporting Point One: Donating money to homeless organizations can help solve the hunger crisis.
• Slide 9: Factual or emotional evidence: Statistics show that when society donates money to the proper organizations, the homeless numbers recede because the shelters can take in more individuals.
• Slide 10: Factual or emotional evidence: Research has shown that the old adage, “it’s better to give than receive” is true after all. A Gallup survey found that 52% of volunteers do it because they like helping others and 38% do it because it makes them feel good.
• Slide 11: Introduce and set up Supporting Point Two: Volunteering personal time to a homeless shelter can help keep administration costs down which will ultimately filter more money to the homeless residents who stay there.
• Slide 12: Factual or emotional: Cutting costs in homeless shelters allows more proceeds to be diverted into affordable housing for the homeless as well as food dispersion to the hungry.
• Slide 13: Factual or emotional evidence: Volunteer work is said to be one of the best self esteem builders and can improve your health in the long run.
• Slide 14: Introduce and set up Supporting Point Three: Joining a big brother organization will allow the parentless youth to have a social interaction with someone other than just paid shelter staff.
• Slide 15: Factual or emotional evidence: The Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization holds regular events with community leaders to help sheltered youth adapt to society.
• Slide 16: Factual or emotional evidence: Along with the social skills building events, everyday interaction with volunteers has proven to increase youth success rates and accelerate learning.
• Slide 17: Call to Action: I am asking for more people to volunteer at homeless shelters and youth centers. This help in needed urgently and I recommend that we start donating money and time immediately.
• Slide 18: Summarize the main points: Donating time and money to homeless organizations and youth centers will not only make you feel good about yourself, but will also benefit society monetarily as well as a socially.
• Slide 19: Restate big idea: Continuing to ignore the current homeless population will lead to greater numbers in the future. This rise in numbers will directly affect the health of our youth and adults that makeup our society.
• Slide 20: Clincher/new bliss: If we come together as a society and get our hands dirty working on this dilemma, we will be able to see the results first hand and build self esteem that will last for the rest of our lives.
