The calming motions of riding waves are being harnessed by a Penwith woman for use in
dealing with a range of health problems. After catching her first breaker, Anne Harrington
thought the elation it evoked could be used to extend the scope of her complementary
therapies. With ten years of experience in Reiki and Counselling, and training in
Homeopathy, she saw in Surfing the opportunity to fuse together her different skills around
a central, boundary-breaking activity to aid her clients. Working with local Surf Schools,
she set up Catch a Wave UK as a Social Enterprise, incorporating her love of wave-riding
with practical healing skills in a new way of treating people's problems.
She said: "For me, from my own experience, surfing has helped with my arthritis; it was
bad at one point and my body was stiff with stress. Going surfing was fantastic, it loosened
me up.” The group recently held their first session at Gwithian Towans where they held a
Tai Chi session before hitting the water.
