FAILED BACK SURGERY TREATMENT: A TIME OF PATIENCE
AND PERSEVERANCE
July 1, 2013 · by clusterh · in Uncategorized
Back surgery in itself, is a serious operation. We know the importance of the spine- it enables us to stand up, sit down, bend over- but
more than that, it enables us to live our lives themselves and be productive. Any anomaly in the back will be scary to the subject.
Back surgery is mostly performed to correct spinal conditions like spinal stenosis, or in the case of spinal injury. The procedure, known
as a Laminectomy, involves making a small incision in the skin and pushing aside the back muscles to access the vertebra. Until here,
all is progressing smoothly. The job at hand completed, the surgeon puts the muscles back in place, stitches you back up, and you
are good to go! Freed from your back ailment! But are you?
FBSS stands for failed back surgery syndrome. It is an after effect of almost all back surgeries, especially laminectomy. It is
characterised by chronic back pain. So, treated from one anomaly, you are thrust into another- a new one that carries the additional
risks of spinal de-conditioning and even diabetes!
‘From the frying pan, into the fire’- is what many of you must be thinking. What good are the thousands of dollars you spent on the
surgery itself? But know this- the surgeon is not responsible every time. Discounting cases of FBSS that will obviously occur in the
event of a botched up or unprofessional surgery, patients treated by even some of the best doctors in the business have been through
this condition post-surgery.
The condition is still under study, and FBSS is considered a complex problem- one that requires different methods of treatment for
different patients. Some conventional methods that have been tapped include physiotherapy, Neuropathy treatment, or nerve
stimulation. Non- conventional treatments have been found in Yoga. But I would strongly urge you to consider your own case and
consult experts for information before going ahead with any one way.
There are online services available to service you with expert advice on treatment that aims to guide you through the treatment
process- by offering both morale and tips. Remember, nothing is blazing fast, and you may have to ‘mix and match’ different failed
back surgery treatments before you can decide on the one right for you. You will need patience and willpower, for in the world of
medicine, these are the only ones which apply to ALL diseases!
