The International Energy Agency (IEA), an autonomous agency, was established in November 1974.
Its primary mandate was – and is – two-fold: to promote energy security amongst its member
countries through collective response to physical disruptions in oil supply, and provide authoritative
research and analysis on ways to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 28 member
countries and beyond. The IEA carries out a comprehensive program of energy co-operation among
its member countries, each of which is obliged to hold oil stocks equivalent to 90 days of its net imports.

According to the US Department of Energy, commercial buildings
consumed 19% of all energy in the US in 2011, or about 18,000 trillion
BTU’s. Energy costs represent 30% of a typical building’s annual
budget and is the single largest operating cost.
But did you know that up to 30% of this energy is wasted?
We’ve identified some of the best “low-cost, no-cost” ways to save
money. These are simple operational changes and require little to no
capital expense.
Preventative Maintenance Agreements for HVAC Systems:
Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) is a year-round
energy expense, especially in a climate like Chicago’s. By having a
professional perform the preventative maintenance that is
recommended by the equipment manufacturer, you can not only extend
equipment life but also reduce energy use. This includes replacing air
filters on a regular basis, checking damper operation, and checking
major components like compressors and burners.
Repairing or Replacing Airside Economizers: Most HVAC systems
in Chicago are required to have an airside economizer—a set of
dampers and controls to use fresh outside air for “free cooling.”
However, recent studies from the New Buildings Institute and
Honeywell found that 64% of all airside economizers do not work
properly. This means that systems are either not taking advantage of
free cooling opportunities (when economizers have failed closed), or
even worse, forced to heat and cool too much outside air (when
economizers have failed open).
Boiler Tune-Ups: By performing a simple combustion analysis and
adjustment, we can keep boilers running at peak efficiency and save
around 5% of a boiler’s annual fuel consumption. For large commercial
buildings, this can be substantial. Plus, there are rebates from the local
gas companies to offset the cost.
Variable Speed Drives: Most fans and pumps do not need to run at
full speed at all times. By installing variable speed drives (also called
variable frequency drives) we can adjust the flow-rate and this greatly
reduces the electric power consumption. Electric Companies offers
generous incentives for VSD’s that help pay the cost.
•HVAC Scheduling, Temperature Set-points and Equipment
Sequencing: In many buildings, HVAC systems are running longer than
necessary to meet occupant needs. This means starting HVAC systems
too early in the day and letting them run too late in the night—or all
night long. Through proper use of programmable thermostats and
building control systems, you can reduce energy use by up to 20%.
•Steam Traps: Consistently, the local gas companies (Nicor Gas,
Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas) have found that repairing or replacing
leaking, failed open steam traps is the single largest opportunity for
savings in commercial and industrial buildings. This is a simple
maintenance process, and the costs can be offset by rebates from the
gas company.
•Annual Benchmarking: By using Energy Star Portfolio Manager, a
free tool from the US EPA and Department of Energy, we can track
energy consumption for a building and see how it compares to similar
building. A multi-year study from Energy Star showed that commercial
office buildings that consistently tracked their energy use saved
almost 10% total from 2011-2014.

The following actions offer a fast return on investment. Many also have a positive effect on clients.
Lighting (освітлення)
• Upgrade all exit signs with light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
• Replace older T12 fluorescent lamps with “super” T8 lamps and high-efficiency electronic ballasts.
• Replace incandescent lamps with efficient alternatives. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), for example, use a quarter of the
electricity and last up to 10 times longer.
• Install occupancy sensors in spaces that are frequently unoccupied, such as restrooms and stairwells with dimming or bi-level
switching. Consider safety needs before installing occupancy sensors or timers in work areas. Ensure that the sensors are
appropriately matched with lamp and ballast combinations to prevent premature failures.
• Use daylighting sensors where possible especially in public spaces with large windows, such as lobbies and meeting rooms.
• Adopt a period of “downtime” lighting. Reducing the overall lighting levels.
HVAC SYSTEMS (системи кондиціонування)
A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system represents a major percentage of the building’s energy consumption—and
energy costs. The monitoring and maintenance activities that follow should be conducted regularly. Calibrate, check, and adjust
thermostats to heat and cool different building zones. Implement setback strategies to reduce HVAC use when areas are
unoccupied or have low use.
Schedule and perform regular maintenance on key HVAC units.
––Clean or replace filters and dampers.
––Inspect ducts and pipe insulation for damage. Repair or replace as needed.

• The energy drawn by office and medical equipment and appliances can add up to a significant portion of a hospital’s energy
usage. Here are some ways to limit consumption.

and processes, cafeterias, and laundries.
• Decreasing water usage directly reduces the energy required to pump water into the building and to heat and cool water in
boilers and chillers.

Energy Assistance for Ukraine (Енергетика допомогу для України) JOIN INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY (РЕЄСТРУЙСЯ Міжнародне енергетичне агентство) The International Energy Agency (IEA), an autonomous agency, was established in November 1974. Its primary mandate was – and is – two-fold: to promote energy security amongst its member countries through collective response to physical disruptions in oil supply, and provide authoritative research and analysis on ways to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 28 member countries and beyond. The IEA carries out a comprehensive program of energy co-operation among its member countries, each of which is obliged to hold oil stocks equivalent to 90 days of its net imports.   • 5. Quick Energy Paybacks ( Швидкий енергії окупності) According to the US Department of Energy, commercial buildings consumed 19% of all energy in the US in 2011, or about 18,000 trillion BTU’s. Energy costs represent 30% of a typical building’s annual budget and is the single largest operating cost. But did you know that up to 30% of this energy is wasted? We’ve identified some of the best “low-cost, no-cost” ways to save money. These are simple operational changes and require little to no capital expense. Preventative Maintenance Agreements for HVAC Systems: Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) is a year-round energy expense, especially in a climate like Chicago’s. By having a professional perform the preventative maintenance that is recommended by the equipment manufacturer, you can not only extend equipment life but also reduce energy use. This includes replacing air filters on a regular basis, checking damper operation, and checking major components like compressors and burners. Repairing or Replacing Airside Economizers: Most HVAC systems in Chicago are required to have an airside economizer—a set of dampers and controls to use fresh outside air for “free cooling.” However, recent studies from the New Buildings Institute and Honeywell found that 64% of all airside economizers do not work properly. This means that systems are either not taking advantage of free cooling opportunities (when economizers have failed closed), or even worse, forced to heat and cool too much outside air (when economizers have failed open). Boiler Tune-Ups: By performing a simple combustion analysis and adjustment, we can keep boilers running at peak efficiency and save around 5% of a boiler’s annual fuel consumption. For large commercial buildings, this can be substantial. Plus, there are rebates from the local gas companies to offset the cost. Variable Speed Drives: Most fans and pumps do not need to run at full speed at all times. By installing variable speed drives (also called variable frequency drives) we can adjust the flow-rate and this greatly reduces the electric power consumption. Electric Companies offers generous incentives for VSD’s that help pay the cost. •HVAC Scheduling, Temperature Set-points and Equipment Sequencing: In many buildings, HVAC systems are running longer than necessary to meet occupant needs. This means starting HVAC systems too early in the day and letting them run too late in the night—or all night long. Through proper use of programmable thermostats and building control systems, you can reduce energy use by up to 20%. •Steam Traps: Consistently, the local gas companies (Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas) have found that repairing or replacing leaking, failed open steam traps is the single largest opportunity for savings in commercial and industrial buildings. This is a simple maintenance process, and the costs can be offset by rebates from the gas company. •Annual Benchmarking: By using Energy Star Portfolio Manager, a free tool from the US EPA and Department of Energy, we can track energy consumption for a building and see how it compares to similar building. A multi-year study from Energy Star showed that commercial office buildings that consistently tracked their energy use saved almost 10% total from 2011-2014.

Many also have a positive effect on clients. Lighting (освітлення) • Upgrade all exit signs with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). • Replace older T12 fluorescent lamps with “super” T8 lamps and high-efficiency electronic ballasts. • Replace incandescent lamps with efficient alternatives. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), for example, use a quarter of the electricity and last up to 10 times longer. • Install occupancy sensors in spaces that are frequently unoccupied, such as restrooms and stairwells with dimming or bi-level switching. Consider safety needs before installing occupancy sensors or timers in work areas. Ensure that the sensors are appropriately matched with lamp and ballast combinations to prevent premature failures. • Use daylighting sensors where possible especially in public spaces with large windows, such as lobbies and meeting rooms. • Adopt a period of “downtime” lighting. Reducing the overall lighting levels. HVAC SYSTEMS (системи кондиціонування) A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system represents a major percentage of the building’s energy consumption—and energy costs. The monitoring and maintenance activities that follow should be conducted regularly. Calibrate, check, and adjust thermostats to heat and cool different building zones. Implement setback strategies to reduce HVAC use when areas are unoccupied or have low use. Schedule and perform regular maintenance on key HVAC units. ––Clean or replace filters and dampers. ––Inspect ducts and pipe insulation for damage. Repair or replace as needed.

Here are some ways to limit consumption. Water Efficiency (водозбереження) • Save energy by using water efficiently—including sanitary water and water used by the HVAC system, medical equipment and processes, cafeterias, and laundries. • Decreasing water usage directly reduces the energy required to pump water into the building and to heat and cool water in boilers and chillers.
