SING whatWE SEE Luke 2:1-20

And there appeared to him an angel of the Lordstanding on the right side of the altar of incense.And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him,and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him,“Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer hasbeen heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you ason, and you shall call his name John. And you willhave joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at hisbirth, for he will be great before the Lord. And hemust not drink wine or strong drink, and he will befilled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother‟swomb. And he will turn many of the children ofIsrael to the Lord their God,

and he will go before him in the spirit and powerof Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to thechildren, and the disobedient to the wisdom of thejust, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall Iknow this? For I am an old man, and my wife isadvanced in years.” And the angel answered him,“I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and Iwas sent to speak to you and to bring you this goodnews. And behold, you will be silent and unable tospeak until the day that these things take place,because you did not believe my words, which willbe fulfilled in their time.” -Luke 1:11-20

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent fromGod to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virginbetrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of thehouse of David. And the virgin‟s name was Mary.And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favoredone, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatlytroubled at the saying, and tried to discern whatsort of greeting this might be. And the angel said toher, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have foundfavor with God. And behold, you will conceive inyour womb and bear a son, and you shall call hisname Jesus. He will be great and will be called theSon of the Most High. And the Lord God will giveto him the throne of his father David,

and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever,and of his kingdom there will be no end.” AndMary said to the angel, “How will this be, since Iam a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “TheHoly Spirit will come upon you, and the power ofthe Most High will overshadow you; therefore thechild to be born will be called holy—the Son ofGod. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her oldage has also conceived a son, and this is the sixthmonth with her who was called barren. Fornothing will be impossible with God.” And Marysaid, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it beto me according to your word.” And the angeldeparted from her. -Luke 1:26-38

But as he considered these things, behold, an angelof the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary asyour wife, for that which is conceived in her isfrom the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and youshall call his name Jesus, for he will save his peoplefrom their sins.” All this took place to fulfill whatthe Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, thevirgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shallcall his name Immanuel” (which means, God withus). -Matthew1:20-23

And in the same region there were shepherds outin the field, keeping watch over their flock bynight. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them,and the glory of the Lord shone around them, andthey were filled with fear. And the angel said tothem, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good newsof great joy that will be for all the people. For untoyou is born this day in the city of David a Savior,who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign foryou: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddlingcloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly therewas with the angel a multitude of the heavenlyhost praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earthpeace among those with whom he is pleased!”When the angels went away from them intoheaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Letus go over to Bethlehem and see this thing thathas happened, which the Lord has made knownto us.” -Luke 2:8-15

Now when they had departed, behold, an angelof the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream andsaid, “Rise, take the child and his mother, andflee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you,for Herod is about to search for the child, todestroy him.” -Matthew 2:13

But when Herod died, behold, an angel of theLord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother andgo to the land of Israel, for those who soughtthe child‟s life are dead.” -Matthew 2:19-20

Max Lucado describes the process ofstudying angels as “biblical whale-watching.”He said, “Angels surface just long enough togrant a glimpse and raise a question but thendisappear before we have a full view.”

“and they can no longer die; for they are likethe angels. They are Gods children, since theyare children of the resurrection.” -Luke 20:36

“What is man that you are mindful of him, theson of man that you care for him? You madehim a little lower than the heavenly beings andcrowned him with glory and honor.” -Psalm 8:4-5

And suddenly there was with the angel amultitude of the heavenly host praising Godand saying, "Glory to God in the highest, andon earth peace among those with whom he ispleased!“ -Luke 2:13, 14

Angels WorshipFor God‟s Glory

“You alone are the Lord. You made theheavens, even the highest heavens, and all theirstarry host, the earth and all that is on it, theseas and all that is in them. You give life toeverything, and the multitudes of heavenworship you.” -Nehemiah 9:6

“Where were you when I laid the earthsfoundation? Tell me, if you understand.Who marked off its dimensions? Surely youknow! Who stretched a measuring lineacross it? On what were its footings set, orwho laid its cornerstone- while the morningstars sang together and all the angelsshouted for joy?” -Job 38:4-7

“All the angels were standing around thethrone and around the elders and the fourliving creatures. They fell down on theirfaces before the throne and worshiped God,saying: „Amen! Praise and glory and wisdomand thanks and honor and power andstrength be to our God for ever and ever.Amen!‟” -Revelation 7:11

Angels WorkFor God‟s Pleasure

“Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mightyones who do his bidding, who obey his word.Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, youhis servants who do his will.” -Psalms 103:20-21

“Are not all angels ministering spirits sentto serve those who will inherit salvation?” -Hebrews 1:14

“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by sodoing some people have entertained angelswithout knowing it.” -Hebrews 13:2

“The angel of the LORD encamps aroundthose who fear him, and he delivers them.” -Psalms 34:7“For he will command his angels concerningyou to guard you in all your ways.” -Psalms 91:11

Angels War For God‟s Victory

“Then I looked and heard the voice of manyangels, numbering thousands upon thousands,and ten thousand times ten thousand. Theyencircled the throne and the living creatures andthe elders. In a loud voice they sang: „Worthy isthe Lamb, who was slain, to receive power andwealth and wisdom and strength and honor andglory and praise!‟” -Revelation 5:11-12

“And there was war in heaven. Michael and hisangels fought against the dragon, and the dragonand his angels fought back. But he was not strongenough, and they lost their place in heaven. Thegreat dragon was hurled down—that ancientserpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads thewhole world astray. He was hurled to the earth,and his angels with him.” Revelation 12:7-9
