Things you NEED to do before even considering a layout or
design for your landing page
I have already covered the basics of “What Makes a Good Landing Page” in a previous post, so let’s get
right into this post on what you need to always be sure to do before you layout the elements, and before you
start design and certainly before you set these landing pages up on any public links.
VERY IM PORTANT – Setup Filters to filter out your internal traffic AND the traffic form your
developer or development team
1. If you DO NOT do this then your Analytic report data will show ALL the clicks from you and your
developers and not just legitimate SEO or PPC traffic. So if you see 3 in 100 visitors converting 93%
conversion rate) – you will think “this is ‘t too bad” but if you filter out your internal traffic and that of
your developer(s) that conversion rate will instantly be MUCH higher! So exclude all those click from
developers testing pages and you looking at them every 30 minutes
2. To get your IP Address just use “http://www.whatismyip.com/” and look at the large bold blue font top
center
3. The Best step by step on how ot set this up in Google Analytics can be read by clicking here.
M ake sure you have a staging area to test them
1. It is a great practice to do your LP testing and development in a staging area that is not picked up by
Search Engines
2. I recommend a couple things
3. Setup a Password protected folder like yourdomain.com/lp-staging and also drop a line in your robots
txt in there that instructs SE’s to NOT index this folder
4. Example - (User-agent: * Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /lp-staging/)
5. Setup a SubDoamin like lptest.yourdomain.com
Setup Google Optimizer Code
1. I will cover the importance of A/B Testing in an article later this week – but the best resource on
how to set it up can be seen here
Decide What browsers your pages will support
The most common practice among agencies and freelance developers alike is to upport CURRENT version
and back 2.
1. This if the latest public stable version of MSIE is MSIE 9, hen you should be sure your landing pages
are viewable on MSIE 9, and back two MSIE 8 & MSIE7. (Please note – I say “public stable version”
because it is impossible to support beta versions of browsers)
VERY IM PORTANT – Allocate time and budget for M OBILE versions of your LP’s
1. Of the 300+ sites I monitor analytics for since about Dec 2011 I have sine a weekly (sometimes daily)
increase in traffic from mobile devices, this isn’t really surprising,
2. BUT WHAT IS INTERESTING/SURPRISING – if the mobile user lands on a page that is NOT optimized
for a mobile device – they leave in under 2 seconds. this makes your abandonment rate SKY HIGH
3. In addition to catering to the Mobile User Expectation and in creasing conversion via Mobile devices,
you are ALSO getting on Google’s Mobile Index. – SO you content is in the Google Content Index, and
ALSO in the growing Mobile Index – so you kill 2 birds with one stone.
