“How long is it going to take me to write this
paper? “ my students often ask me. I always an-
swer: “For a ten-page assignment, budget 2 hours
per page for research and 1 hour per page for
writing and revising. You’ll need to carve 30 hours
out of your life for the next few weeks.” Their
faces fall. Then I ask my follow up question:
“How would you like to write this paper in about
half the time?”
What is the ENC method ?
It’s a method that will equip you to manage
data, quotes, facts, ideas, and even your own
ideas so you can later incorporate them into
a paper. This is a fast, electronic means of
managing note cards both for the collecting
and the retaining of material for a paper.
With the ENC method, you capture im-
portant information and ideas--even your
own--in order to later integrate them into an
extended research paper of any length for
college or high school.
It’s faster, it’s more accurate, and it frees
the writer to focus more on the substance of
writing rather than the distraction of manag-
ing data for footnotes. The ENC method was
developed by the author when she was a
graduate student at the University of West
Florida. Later, as an instructor, she was chal-
lenged by her students who wanted to learn
her “secret weapon.” This book was written
for them in a casual, non-academic tone. It
comes with an easy reference card and step
by step instructions for researching a paper
in the traditional bib card/note card method
as well as the ENC method, which saves
40% -50% of the writer’s time.
Beth Rodgers teaches Composition at the

“Beth Rodgers’ savvy ENC4ENC: Electronic Note Cards mini-
manual is a gem. She gives freshman composition students
a refreshingly clear method for organizing and conducting
library and electronic database research. Moreover, Rodg-
ers’ strategy helps relieve student anxiety about doing re-
search papers. She reassuringly takes students by the hand
and walks them through the process, one
logical step at a time. Rodgers’ warm
presence and sense of humor give this
booklet an appealing bounce, too.
I highly recommend ENC4ENC for the
freshman composition classroom.”
Dr. Bruce Bickley, Professor of English
Emeritus, Florida State University
