Researchers at ABC News reported
the following challenge to home
builders: to create nearly a quarter
of a million American jobs by
increasing the percentage of
American made products that are
used in building a home. They
reported that a mere 5% increase in American made
products in the residential construction industry would
create approximately 220,000 jobs.
We accepted the challenge - and here’s a few that ways
you can help:
Ask for American made products when you
are buying materials & goods for your home
• Can we use a local supplier?
• Can we use products that are made in America?
• How many American products can we use?
Even a small increase in our purchasing of locally and
domestically made products can have a huge impact on
our economy and lives.

This 35-bed emergency homeless shelter is operated by The
Salvation Army of Washtenaw County. The shelter operates and
has dedicated staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For
the guests who stay there it is more than just a shelter, it is
“home”. During this time guests are working toward estab-
lishing greater personal self-sufficiency with the goal of being
able to move into more permanent housing upon completion
of the program. This involves not only establishing a steady
income, saving money, and dealing with bad credit histories,
but also addressing any other issues that may have sabotaged their
efforts to stay in permanent housing in the past. The Staples Family
Center serves a wide cross-section of homeless people including
single adults, married couples, and families with children. The resi-
dents also represent a wide range of occupations, education levels
and past work environments. Each resident has a unique, personal
story to tell which may include difficult periods and long histories
of substance abuse, domestic violence, medical problems and/
or other challenges in their lives. Our goal for their stay at Staples
Family Center is to provide them opportunities for physical, spiritu-
al, emotional and social growth, and to create an environment of
encouragement and healing. The Festive Affair is the crucial find-
raising event that sustains this very important place.
