Details (prREACH) Approximately fifty million US citizens between the ages of 60 and 75 are experiencing a hearing
ailment identified as tinnitus. The primary symptom of tinnitus, which generally strikes significantly more men
than women, is hearing sounds which nobody else is able to hear. Tinnitus is usually not considered a
disease in itself but an indicator of something else happening in one or more of the four areas of the auditory
system – the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain. Although it is not a type of loss of
hearing by itself, it is often related to other forms of either conductive or sensorineural hearing loss. But
because tinnitus can cause individuals to hear the buzzing or ringing sound continuously, this can have the
effect of lowering an individual’s absolute threshold of hearing, making it harder to hear low-level sounds
normally.
The audiologists at Asheville Audiology Services in Asheville, NC are regularly investigating new tinnitus
therapies to make them available locally. Because many of these treatment options are rather new, long
term tinnitus sufferers may not know that new therapies have been introduced. The ability to provide the
most current tinnitus therapies locally in Asheville, NC is a point of pride for the audiologists at Asheville

most current tinnitus therapies locally in Asheville, NC is a point of pride for the audiologists at Asheville
Audiology Services. In addition to maintaining a list of presently available tinnitus therapies on their website,
the staff at Asheville Audiology Services often writes about new developments on the company blog. Details
about the tinnitus therapies listed below are available on the Asheville Audiology Services website or by
appointment.
Hearing aids. People with tinnitus typically also have some amount of hearing loss. The double benefit of
hearing aids is that they cover the noises of the tinnitus while also boosting hearing ability. Tinnitus sufferers
using hearing aids commonly report partial or complete alleviation of tinnitus symptoms.
Maskers. Covering up (or masking) the sounds of tinnitus can be achieved through an electronic tinnitus
masker. Many patients experience good results with tinnitus maskers even though they don’t improve
hearing the way a hearing aid does.
Counseling and Relaxation. Relaxation methods are important for tinnitus patients because stress tends to
make tinnitus seem worse. Counseling may be appropriate when tinnitus causes depression, anxiety or
other psychiatric problems.
Medication. Many tinnitus patients experience anxiety or other strong emotional responses to their tinnitus.
Certain drug treatments may provide relief from these emotional reactions and give some relief from the
ringing in the ears.
