My film genre is teenage highschool drama. As we look into the real media
product, there are many examples that I can relate my product to; such as
Highschool Musical or Glee and many other such films.
In my movie, you will see, the same environment with different group of
students with including the ‘mean girls’; the arrogant girls that like to pick on
others and think of themselves as the more superior species. The ‘we love the
big theory’ kids; students that can’t be bothered with the materialistic world
and would rather indulge in their books. The normal, average kids; who wish to
be on good terms with their books and also like to be part of the melodramatic
highschool jungle. This was particularly distinguished by their dressing in order
to give a message, that, every single type of student is affected by the new
change. That new change being, the return of a former student.
I have included a number of shots with different locations of the same college,
that is very noticable in other highschool movies.
Even though the mise-en-scene was pretty much inspired by the typical
highschool movies, the content or the theme is still a little different, as, this
movie is not really a ‘spiritual’ or ‘inspiring’ movie. It includes a lot of thrill,
suspense and kids adult drama. It is not something really ‘musical’.
2. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
As I mentioned before, that this movie represents all
class of students; in order to create a difference in their
styles, we focused on their clothing and props;
The mean girls woreVERY expensive clothes and
accessories, branded bags and fancy gagdets.
The nerd group could be seen in the very first shot of
the school location where they were dressed in casual
clothings, check shirts and their props were a laptop and
some books.
The normal students included the girl in the first scene
who casually wakes up an is in her casual shalwar
kameez. And also, in other shots, normal students could
be seen wearing very casual clothes and having casual
props.
We made sure that the audience could tell the
difference only by taking a look at the actors.
As there is no well recognised institute that
might support my product because Pakistani
cinema is not idealy supportive of the youth and
their talent regarding this particular field. So, the
options that I am left with are uploading the
video on youtube and introducing it in different
filmfests and media competitions.
I might even share it on facebook, as I want to
make use of all the social media networks in
order to introduce my product to a larger
audience.
The audience expected to be attracted to my
product are youngsters above 16 to be
specific. The ones who enjoy suspense and
thrill might also be entertained. All the
highschool film fans will find themselves
relating to one character or the other as they
themselves are undergoing the same point in
their life.
5. How did you attract/address your
audience?
We were very focused on attracting our
audience from the very beginning. So, our
approach was to attract them by starting the
movie with suspense and to build curiosity in
the minds of intelligent viewers. The most
important thing, in order to create attraction is
the build interest. From the beginning to the
very end of the clip, the mystery of the
concerened character prevailed. Even the
gender of the character stayed hidden from
the knowlege of the viewers.
This project was verry beneficial in terms of making us aware of media related
technology. It is because of this project, that we got to learn things that a common
person does not have knowledge of; Such as, the frames (25 frames per second).
In my country, youtube was banned due to some reasons. Hence we made use of proxys
to unblock youtube.
We even learnt about different types of cameras.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from
it to the full product?
Preliminary task was our first experience of making a project
for OCR with knowledge and application of a particular set of
rules and camera angles as well as shots, that provided us with
enough confidence to prepare a bigger project later. As we
were now aware of the mistakes we made and embraced
ourselves for situations that usually arise during the shooting
as this time we were prepared to deal with them.
In the preliminary task the biggest problem that we encounter
was the immature acting of our actors. And how much time
we had to waste in order to get them to act according to how
we wanted and to get them serious, into the movie.
We even had to practice with our framing as in preliminary
exercise we dealt with the framing issue a lot.
Another very important thing that now we take full measures
for is that we don’t miss any shot in the movie as in
preliminary exercise, we missed one by mistake. And we had
to arrange for a shooting again.
So, we kept all these things in mind this time and hence, had a
more practical approach and an improved outcome.
