Psitalia island - Organic Cleaning

2. Before the battle of Salamis in 480 BC, the
Persians settled on the island Persian guard,
composed of warriors and nobles. After the
battle, the Persian fleet leaving to Faliro left the
guard of Psyttalia and Aristides landed on the
island and killed all Persians. Therefore one of
the trophies after winning, was set up on
Psyttalia island. It is commemorated by
Aeschylus, Herodotus, Plutarch, Strabo,
Pausanias and other authors as a place of
worship of Pan,

4. Since the 50s, people began to use homemade
cesspools and carry sewage by tankers to ease
recipients, which could meet with the needs of
Athens. In 1959, therefore, they began to build
the central drain, leading the effluent of the
historic center in Akrokeramos, in Keratsini area,
and pouring them into the sea until 1994. The
pipeline created environmental problems ,
thereby contaminating the Saronic Gulf and the
coastal region of Elefsina.

5. Greece during that time was developing economically
and as a member of the EEC (European Economic
Community) has obtained the legal obligation to protect
its sea environment. The most important legal document
for the effluent, was Directive 91/271 / EEC, requiring at
least secondary wastewater treatment for all
agglomerations of more than 15,000 inhabitants, up to
the end of 2000. Athens in 1985, with the operation of
the Wastewater and sewage Metamorphosis Centre,
managed to close the numerous "cesspool" that were
scattered in the Attica basin. There was no national
experience on this, so people reacted strongly.

6. And like this, they started to build the
Supplemental Sewerage Pipeline, to transport
waste water from the rest of Athens in
Akrokeramo and undersea pipelines of
wastewater after pretreatment, from Akrokeramo
to Psyttalia, the mainly treatment projects on the
island and two underwater outfall pipes 1,870
meters each for the disposal of the already
treated wastewater to the Saronic Gulf, at a depth
of 63 meters. This project was very complicated,
but it would be one of the largest in K.E.L extent,
on Earth, after covering almost all the area
throughout the island
