Pakistan-China Relations
1947-2012
1947-1960
 Pakistan gained Independence (1947)
 The communist rebels won the war
against nationalist government in October
1949 led by Mao Zedong.
 Pakistan was an ally of US so it was not
possible to become an ally of China
because it was a communalist state.
1961-1974
 In 1950, Pakistan became the first Muslim
country and the 3rd non-communist country to
recognize China.
 China Won some of India’s land in March 1963.
 China gave a $60 million interest free loan to
Pakistan in 1963.
 China was the world’s largest purchaser of
Pakistani cotton in 1963.
 Regular flights of PIA went to China and was the
first one to do so in August 1964.
 In 1964, China supported Kashmir issue in favor
 During the 1965 War with India China supplied Military
Aid To Pakistan and applied diplomatic pressure on
India.
 In February 1972, Bhutto visited China and it granted
previous loan to Pakistan.
 China supplied military aid to Pakistan.
1974-2010 Important Agreement
 Karakoram Highway was built between the two countries by the
economic assistance of China
 In 1986, Zia visited China and signed a nuclear Cooperation
treaty to enhance the two countries relation.
 A 300-megawatt nuclear power plant, built with Chinese help in
Punjab province, is completed.
 2006 – free trade agreement
 2008 China vows to help Pakistan in civil nuclear technology by
building and helping in the Khusab Nuclear Programme
providing technology to Pakistan for better maintenance of civil
nuclear plants.
 2008 Pakistan and China to build first ever train route through
the Karakoram Highway, ultimately linking China's rail route-net
to Gwadar Port.
Important Agreement
 Missile: Pakistan's army has both short- and
medium-range ballistic missiles, such as the Shaheen
missile series, that experts say are modifications of
Chinese imports.
 Aircraft: Pakistan is producing the JF-17 Thunder
multi-role combat aircraft jointly with China. The K-8
Karakorum light attack aircraft was also co produced.
 Nuclear Program: China supplies Pakistan with
nuclear technology and assistance, including what
experts suspect was the blueprint for Pakistan's
nuclear bomb.
 Pak-China relations began in 1950’s
 Pakistan one of the first few nations to recognize China as
People’s
Republic.
 Pakistan considers China to be its strongest ally.
 China is the main provider of technical, economic and military
assistance to Pakistan
 The two countries have cooperated on a variety of large-
scale infrastructure projects in Pakistan
 Trade between Islamabad and Beijing now hovers around
$7 billion a year, and both sides are set on raising the figure
to $15 billion by 2010.

the countries.
