1. The legend of the Children of Lir
Once upon a time there lived a king called Lir. He lived with his wife and four children:
Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra and Conn. They lived in a castle in the middle of a forest. When
Lir’s wife died they were all very sad. After a few years Lir got married again. He married
a jealous wife called Aoife.
Aoife thought that Lir loved his children more than he loved her. Aoife hated the
children. Soon she thought of a plan to get rid of the children.
One summer’s day Aoife took the children to swim in a lake near the castle. The children
were really happy to be playing in the water. Suddenly Aoife took out a magic wand. There
was a flash of light and the children the children vanished. In their place were four beautiful
white swans. One of the swans opened its beak and spoke with Fionnuala's voice: "Oh, what
have you done to us?" she asked in a frightened voice."I have put a spell on you," replied Aoife.
"You will be swans for nine hundred years. You will spend three hundred years on this lake,
three hundred years on the Sea of Moyle and three hundred years on the Island of Glora. Only
the sound of a church bell can break the spell.”
Aiofe went back to the castle and told Lir that his children had drowned. Lir was so
sad he started crying. He rushed down to the lake and saw no children. He saw only four
beautiful swans. One of them spoke to him. It was Fionnuala who spoke to him. She told him
what Aoife had done to them.
The King raced back to the castle and pleaded with Aoife to change the swans back into
children, but she refused. Now he saw how selfish she was and banished her from the kingdom.
Lir promised a reward to anyone who could break the spell, but nobody knew how.
Lir spent the rest of his life talking to his children, until he grew too old and died. The
swans were heartbroken. They no longer sang or talked, and nobody came to see them.

2. Three hundred years passed and it was time for the swans to move on to the cold and
stormy Sea of Moyle between Ireland and Scotland. It was a wild place and there was little
food. The years passed slowly. When it was time for them to fly to the Isle of Glora the swans
were old and tired. Although it was warmer on the island and there was lots of food they were
still very lonely.
Then one day they heard the sound they had waited nine hundred years for. It was the
sound of a church bell.
The bell was ringing in the tower of a little church. An old man called Caomhog, stood
outside. He was amazed to hear the swans talking and listened to their sad story in
astonishment. Then he went inside his church and brought out some holy water which he
sprinkled on the swans. As soon as the water touched them the swans began to change into
old, old people. Fionnuala put her arms around her brothers and they all fell to the ground
dead.
The monk buried them in one grave. That night he dreamed he saw four swans flying up
through the clouds. He knew the children of Lir were with their mother and father.

3. Legenda o dzieciach Lira

Aoife myślała, że Lir kocha swoje dzieci bardziej niż ją. Aoife nienawidziła dzieci.
Wkrótce wymyśliła plan jak się ich pozbyć.
Pewnego letniego dnia, Aoife zabrała dzieci, żeby popływały w jeziorze w pobliżu
zamku. Dzieci były naprawdę szczęśliwe, że mogły pobawić się w wodzie. Nagle Aoife
wyciągnęła magiczną różdżkę. Pojawił się błysk światła i dzieci zniknęły. W ich miejsce
pojawiły się cztery piękne, białe łabędzie. Jeden z łabędzi otworzył swój dziób i przemówił
głosem Fionnuali: „ Co nam zrobiłaś? ” - zapytała przerażonym głosem. „ Rzuciłam na was
klątwę ” - odpowiedziała Aoife. Będziecie łabędziami dziewięćset lat. Spędzicie trzysta lat na
tym jeziorze, trzysta lat na morzu Moyle i trzysta lat na wyspie Glora. Tylko dźwięk
kościelnego dzwonu może cofnąć czar.
Aoife wróciła do zamku i powiedziała Lirowi, że jego dzieci utonęły. Lir był bardzo
smutny, zaczął płakać. Pobiegł szybko nad jezioro i nie ujrzał dzieci. Zobaczył tylko cztery
piękne łabędzie. Jeden z nich przemówił do niego. Była to Fionnuala. Powiedziała mu co
zrobiła im Aoife.

4. Król pospieszył z powrotem do zamku i błagał Aoife, żeby zmieniła łabędzie w dzieci,
ale ona odmówiła. Teraz zobaczył jak samolubna była jego żona i wygnał ją z królestwa. Lir
obiecał nagrodę, temu kto mógłby złamać klątwę, ale nikt nie wiedział jak.
Lir spędził resztę swego życia rozmawiając ze swoimi dzieci, dopóki nie zestarzał się
i nie umarł. Łabędzie były zrozpaczone, nie śpiewały więcej ani nie rozmawiały, nikt też nie
przychodził ich odwiedzać.
Trzysta lat minęło i był czas dla łabędzi, żeby przeniosły się na zimne i burzowe morze
Moyla pomiędzy Irlandią a Szkocją. Było to dzikie miejsce i było mało jedzenia. Lata mijały
powoli. Kiedy nastał czas, żeby odleciały na wyspę Glora łabędzie były już stare i zmęczone.
Pomimo, że na wyspie było cieplej i było dużo jedzenia, one były ciągle bardzo samotne.
Pewnego dnia łabędzie usłyszały dźwięk, na który czekały dziewięćset lat. To był
dźwięk kościelnego dzwonu.
Dzwon dzwonił z wieży małego kościoła. Stary mężczyzna zwany Caomhog stał na
zewnątrz. Był zdumiony słysząc rozmawiające łabędzie i słuchał ich historii ze zdziwieniem.
Potem wszedł do kościoła i wyniósł trochę wody święconej, którą skropił łabędzie. Jak tylko
woda dotknęła łabędzi zaczęły się zmieniać w starych, starych ludzi. Fionnuala objęła swych
braci i wszyscy upadli na ziemię martwi.
Mnich pochował ich w grobie. Tej nocy śnił, że widział cztery łabędzie latające
w chmurach. Wiedział, że dzieci Lira są ze swoją mamą i swoim tatą.
