1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install the lip seal in hub (1). Apply clean oil to the lip of the
seal.
2. Heat bearing cone (2) to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Install bearing cone
(2) on hub (1) .
3. Use Tooling (B) in order to install the Duo-Cone seal on hub (1) .

4. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (3). Install the bearing cups in hub (4) .
5. Use Tooling (B) in order to install the Duo-Cone seal on hub (4) .
6. Attach Tooling (C) and use a hoist in order to install hub (4) on hub (1). The hub weighs
approximately 260 kg (580 lb).

7. Heat bearing cone (7) to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Install bearing cone
(7) on the hub.
8. Place Tooling (D) on the bearing cone. Install retainer (5) and bolts (6). Turn the hub as you
tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft). Allow the bearing cone to
return to room temperature. Then, remove the retainer and Tooling (D) .
9. Install hub (8) in ring gear (10). Install retainer (8). The hub weighs approximately 22 kg
(48 lb).
10. Turn over the unit of hub (8) and of ring gear (9). Attach Tooling (E) and use a hoist in
order to install the unit in hub (4). The hub and the ring gear as a unit weigh approximately
73 kg (160 lb).

11. Insert pins (11) in the hub. Hub (7) should be positioned below the end of hub (1) .
12. Use Tooling (A) and a press in order to install ring (12) in retainer (5) .
13. Install retainer (5) and bolts (6) on the hub.
Note: The retainer must be in metal-to-metal contact with the hub.
14. Use a feeler gauge in order to measure the distance between retainer (5) and pins (11). The
correct dimension is 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.0031 ± 0.0020 inch).

15. Install the two bearings in each gear (15) .
16. Install gears (15) in planetary carrier (13) .
17. Lower the temperature of shaft (14). Align hole (X) in shaft (14) with hole (X) in planetary
carrier (12). Use a press in order to install shaft (14). Install the roll pin in hole (X) in order
to retain shaft (14) .
18. Use a hoist in order to install planetary carrier (13) on sun gear (16). The weight of
planetary carrier is approximately 32 kg (71 lb).
19. Install spiral ring (17) .

20. Install sun gear (18) and ring (19) in the hub.
21. Turn over planetary carrier (13). Attach Tooling (F) for the hoist.
22. Align the gears in planetary carrier (13) with ring gear (10) and with sun gear (18). Make
sure that sun gear (18) engages the gears in planetary carrier (13). Make sure that ring (19)
remains in the correct position.

23. Lower the temperature of the two bearing cups. Install the bearing cups in gears (22) .
24. Install gears (22) with two bearing cones in planetary carrier (20) .
25. Lower the temperature of shafts (21). Use a press in order to install the shafts in planetary
carrier (20) .
26. Turn over planetary carrier (20). Measure the distance of extension of the shafts above the
planetary carrier. See Illustration 15. The correct dimension is 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.0031 ±
0.0020 inch).
27. Install the O-ring seals on plates (23). Place plates (22) on the shafts. Install bolts (24) .
Note: The planetary shafts must be in metal-to-metal contact with the cover plates.

28. Attach Tooling (G) to planetary carrier (20) .
29. Install O-ring seals (25) and (26). O-ring seal (25) is located under the drain plug. Align the
drain holes in the planetary carrier and in the hub.
30. Install planetary carrier (20) on the hub. The planetary carrier weighs approximately 105 kg
(230 lb).
31. Install the bolts that hold the planetary carrier to the hub. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
475 ± 50 N·m (350 ± 37 lb ft). Remove Tooling (G) .
End By: Install the final drive. See the procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive -
Install" in this module.

1. Inspect the O-ring seals. Replace any seals that are worn or damaged.
2. Position an O-ring seal on the face of the steering differential.

3. Fasten a hoist with Tooling (A) to final drive (1). Adjust Tooling (A) in order to orient the
final drive to a level position. Install final drive (1) in the machine. The final drive weighs
approximately 625 kg (1375 lb).
4. Install two bolts (3) that hold the final drive to the steering differential and brake. Tighten
the two bolts to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (75 ± 15 lb ft).
5. Install 26 bolts (2) that hold the final drive to the frame. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 650
± 50 N·m (480 ± 37 lb ft). Remove Tooling (A) .
6. Apply SAE 30W oil to the threads of the bolts for the sprocket segments. Install the bolts
with the bolts with the washers against the final drive. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 300 ±
50 N·m (220 ± 37 lb ft). Then, tighten the nuts by an additional 120 degree turn. Final
torque is a minimum of 570 N·m (420 lb ft).
7. Use Tooling (B) in order to install outer axle (4) in the final drive. Make sure that the thrust
button between the inner axle and the outer axle is installed in the end of the outer axle.

8. Install retainer (6) in the sun gear.
9. Install O-ring seal (7) on cover (5). Install the cover on the final drive.
NOTICE
Several minutes are required to completely fill each final drive
compartment with oil. The oil must flow through bearings to fill the
inner compartment.
Make certain the entire quantity of oil as specified on the Refill
Capacity chart is added to the final drive.
Operation of the machine with incorrect final drive oil level will cause
final drive failure.
10. Orient drain plug (8) downward. Tighten the drain plug to a torque of 105 ± 10 N·m (75 ± 7
lb ft). Fill the final drive with oil.

Start By:
A. Separate the track on the left side of the machine. See the procedure in Disassembly and
Assembly, "Track - Separate" in this module.
B. Remove the steering motor. Refer to the procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering
Motor - Remove" in the Service Manual for your machine.
1. Remove bolts (1). Install forcing screws in order to remove adapter (2) from the housing.
2. Remove seal ring (3) from adapter (2) .

3. Remove cover (4) with the O-ring seal from the final drive.
4. Remove retainer (5) from the sun gear.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
5. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove outer axle (6). Rotate the final drive housing until drain
plug (7) is at the bottom. Drain the oil from the final drive.

6. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove inner axle (8) .

7. Insert Tooling (B) in the final drive housing approximately 940 mm (37.0 inch). Rotate
Tooling (B) by 180 degrees. Then, pull out Tooling (B) by approximately 25 mm (1.0 inch),
until the carrier is off the bevel gear shaft. Rotate Tooling (B) backward by 180 degrees.
Remove Tooling (B) .

8. Adjust Tooling (C) according to Illustration 9.
9. Remove two sprocket bolts. Attach a hoist with Tooling (C) .
10. Remove seven bolts (9) .
11. Install Tooling (D) .
12. Remove remaining bolts (10). Remove bolts (12) but do not remove bolt (11) .
13. Pull out the final drive approximately 25 mm (1.0 inch) until the unit is suspended. The unit
of the final drive with the steering differential and with the brake weighs approximately 800
kg (1800 lb).
14. Use the hoist and Tooling (D) in order to rotate the unit by approximately 45 degrees
rearward. The rotation loosens the pinion housing for the steering motor.

15. Remove the unit from the machine. Remove O-ring seals (13) .

1. Install O-ring seals (13). Apply a light coat of grease to the O-ring on the final drive flange.
Use Tooling (C) in order to position the unit, as shown. Install the unit in the machine. The
unit of the final drive with the steering differential and with the brake weighs approximately
800 kg (1800 lb).
2. When the rear flange of the unit is within 25 mm (1 inch) of installation, use Tooling (D) in
order to rotate the unit clockwise.

3. Install bolts (10) and (12). Use the bolts in order to complete the installation of the flange.
4. Remove Tooling (D) .
5. Install bolts (9) in the final drive flange.
6. Remove Tooling (C) .
7. Remove the following components from the final drive on the other side of the machine: the
cover, the retainer and the outer axle.

8. Use Tooling (A) in order to install inner axle (8). When you install the inner axle, use inner
axle (8) and Tooling (A) in order to slide the carrier onto the bevel gear shaft.
9. Release the brakes. Use Tooling (A) in order to install outer axle (7) on the right track.
10. Repeat Step 9 on the left track.

11. Install the following components on the final drives on both sides of the machine: retainer
(5), the O-ring seal and cover (4) .
12. Fill the final drive with oil.
ReferenceRefer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and
Refill Capacities" for your machine.
13. Install seal ring (4) on adapter (2) for the steering motor. Apply clean oil to the seal ring.

14. Install adapter (2) with bolts (1) .

Start By:
A. Remove the unit of the final drive, differential, and brake (left side). Refer to Disassembly and
Assembly, "Final Drive, Differential, and Brake (Left Side) - Remove" for the correct procedure.
1. Remove bolts and washers (1). Remove bolts (2) .

2. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device. Remove planetary carrier (3). The weight of the
planetary carrier is approximately 48 kg (105 lb).
3. Remove remaining two bolts (2) and slinger (4) from planetary carrier (7) .
4. Remove the following components from ring gear (6) : retainer (5), the thrust ring and planetary
carrier (7) .

5. Remove seal ring (9) from planetary carrier (7) .
6. Use a hammer and a punch in order to push pin (10) in shaft (8) .
7. Remove the following components from planetary carrier (7) : shaft (8), gear (11), discs (13) and
bearing (12) .
8. Remove pin (10) from shaft (8).
9. Repeat Steps 6 through 8 for the remaining three planetary gears.
10. Remove sun gear (14) from planetary carrier (15) .

11. Remove bolts (16). Remove plate (17) and gear (18) from the planetary carrier.
12. Use Tooling (B) in order to compress the retaining ring that holds planetary carrier (15) in position in
ring gear (6). Separate the planetary carrier from the ring gear. Remove the retaining ring from
planetary carrier (15) .
13. Use a hammer and a punch in order to push pin (20) in shaft (19) .
14. Remove the following components from planetary carrier (15) : shaft (19), gear (21), discs (23) and
bearing (22) .
15. Repeat Steps 13 and 14 for the two remaining planetary gears.

16. Place a bolt in the teeth of pinion (24) in order to prevent the pinion from turning.
17. Bend the tang on lockwasher (26) away from nut (28). Use Tooling (C) in order to remove nut (28)
from the pinion.
18. Remove lockwasher (26) and washer (25) from the pinion.
19. Remove bolt (27). Remove carrier (29) from the support bracket.

20. Use Tooling (D) in order to force pinion (24) from bearing cone (30) and from carrier (29) .
21. Use Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing cone (31) from pinion (24) .
22. Remove bearing cups (32) from carrier (29) .
23. Remove bolts (33). Remove support bracket (34) and shims (35) from the housing.

24. Remove bolts (36). Remove gear (37) from housing (38) .
Note: Some spring pressure exists between brake housing (39) and final drive housing (41). Slowly
loosen bolts (40) .
25. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (F) to brake housing (39). Remove two bolts (40).
Remove brake housing (39) from final drive housing (41). The brake housing weighs approximately
152 kg (335 lb).
