• Who was the advert created by?
• What is the purpose?
• Is the add effective in your opinion?
• Why could it be controversial? and by whom?
• It is offensive in your opinion? Why and why not?
This advert was created by a clothing brand by the name of ‘United Colours of Benetton’
to promote their partnership campaign the ‘Unhate Foundation’. This advert wasn’t
created intentionally to be controversial as the message they are trying to convey is that
everyone is the same on the inside no matter what they look like on the outside. This is
an effective advert as the using of a bare human heart grabs peoples attention as it is
unnatural to see this in this form. It is clear why this advert could be seen as
controversial as they categorise different skin colours in to white, black and yellow. The
terms ‘black and white’ are generically used throughout the world as a pose to ‘yellow’
which is never used to describe skin colour. This advert does not offend me as I am
‘white’ and being categorised as white is normal for me. I also do not think the term
‘black’ is offensive either as the term is also used to describe skin colour and is used by
people across the world. On the other hand I can see why the term ‘yellow’ to describe
skin colour can be offensive as I think it is referring to Asians who are not usually
described using ‘yellow’.
