The IOC chose Rio de Janeiro over Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, shocking and disappointing many in Chicago and the United States. This marked the first time since 1980 that the US failed in back-to-back Olympic bid attempts. While sadness reigned over the announcement, Chicagoans said they would continue working to improve the city's schools, transportation, and safety. Some also looked forward to upcoming LGBT sporting events in Chicago as a positive outcome.
