Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Females
Women, Injury, and PTSD
Injury is not unusual in women; five out of ten women experience a traumatic event. Girls have a
tendency to see traumas that are different than guys. While men and women report precisely the
same symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (hyperarousal, re experiencing, avoidance, and
numbing), some signs are more common for girls or men.
History
Most early info on trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder originated from studies of male
Veterans, mainly Vietnam Veterans. Researchers found that women's reactions were related to man
combat Experts and began to examine the ramifications of sex assault. PTSD can be also caused by
women's experiences of trauma.
Sexual assault is more inclined to trigger PTSD than a great many additional occasions.
Girls may be more likely to blame themselves for injury experiences than guys.
What are the results after trauma
Following an injury, some girls develop PTSD, start drinking or using medications, or might feel
depressed. Girls are a lot more than twice as likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder than
men (10% for girls and 4% for men). There really are a couple of reasons men may get not get more
that are PTSD than women:
Women are more than likely to experience sexual attack.
Of encountering injury hazard
Results from a national mental-health study that is large demonstrate that a little more than half of
women will encounter a minumum of one traumatic event in their life. Girls are somewhat less likely
to see injury than guys. The most typical trauma for women is sexual assault or child sexual abuse.
About one in three women will experience a sexual assault within their life. Speeds of sexual assault
are greater for women than men. Girls are also more likely to experience domestic violence or
mistreated in childhood, to be neglected, or to have a loved one suddenly expire.
Why are some women at higher risk for PTSD?
Maybe not all-women who experience a traumatic occasion develop post-traumatic stress disorder.
Women are far more prone to develop post-traumatic stress disorder if they:
Have a previous mental health issue (for instance depression or anxiety)
Experienced a very serious or life-threatening trauma
Were assaulted

Were hurt during Complex Trauma the event
Had a severe response during the event
Experienced other occasions that were stressful later
Usually do not have social support that is great
Women in the military are at high-risk for exposure to traumatic events, particularly during times of
war. Currently, about 15% of all military personnel in Iraq are women. An increasing variety of
women are definition of ptsd actually being exposed to battle although men are far prone to have
battle. Girls in the armed services are at greater risk for sexual assault than guys or exposure to
sexual-harassment. Future studies are needed to better understand the ramifications of women's
contact with both fight and sexual assault.
Treatment for PTSD
There are good treatments for PTSD. Nonetheless, not everyone who experiences a trauma attempts
remedy. Girls could be more likely than men to find help after a disturbing event. A minumum of one
research found that girls respond to therapy as good as or better than men. This may be because
women are usually more comfortable talking about personal matters with others than guys and
sharing feelings.
What PTSD is like for women
Some PTSD symptoms are far more prevalent in women than guys. Women are somewhat more
likely to have more difficulty feeling feelings to be jumpy, also to prevent things that remind them of
the trauma than guys. Guys are far more likely to have difficulty controlling their anger then girls
and to feel upset. Women with PTSD are more prone to post traumatic stress feel anxious and
depressed, while men with PTSD are far more likely to have issues with alcohol or drugs. Both girls
and men who experience PTSD may develop physical health problems.
