SPECIALTEAMS-Iwasshockedatwhere
UGA finished in my ST rankings in '11.In the 10
yrs prior, UGA had 8Top 24 ST finishes (5 top 7).
The '11 group ret'd K BlairWalsh, P Drew Butler
and their top RM but they plummeted to #81.LY
they had to replace KWalsh (who starred for the
Vikings after missing 14 fg's here as a Sr!) and their P (whose
net dropped from 41.9 in '09 to just 35.8).True frosh P Collin
Barber(PS#28)avg41.5andtheyusedapoochpunterinAdam
Erickson (tm net 36.9). True frosh Marshall Morgan (PS#9),
who has a powerful leg, hit 2-4 from 50+ but missed 6 of his
14 att's.He had 23TB on 54 KO.The Bulldogs only avg 7.5 on
PR's and 22.2 on KR even withTodd Gurley's 100 yd KR td vs
Buffalo (19.6 w/out).They did however climb back to #30.TY
everyone returns and I expect continued improvement.
COACHES- Mark Richt is in his 13th ssn here and earned
SEC COY honors in '02 and '05.LY was only the 3rd time in schl
history UGA reached 12 wins ('80 & '02).Mike Bobo was a QB
here and has been the QB cch s/'01.He became the youngest
coor (32) in the SEC when he was promoted to OC in '07. DC
Todd Grantham returns for his 4th ssn here and boasts 11Y of
NFL coaching experience (DAL DL '08-'09, CLE DC '05-'07).

In Richt's 2nd ssn ('02) he led UGA to their first SEC Title in
20 yrs and set a schl record with 13 wins (#3 AP). Only UGA
and USC finished in the Top 10 each year from '02-'05. UGA's
D finished in theTop 20 for 7 str yrs ('01-'07).Richt became the
then-5th SEC HC to win 10+ in 4 st yrs (Bryant, Dooley, Fulmer,
Spurrier and now also Saban). Richt was 7-4 vs Top 10 teams
at one point but s/'08 is just 2-10.After a #23 finish in '06, UGA
was the consensus pick for 3rd in the East in '07 but I picked
them to tie for the East Title and that they did. They finished #2
in the final polls. In '08 they were tagged #1 in the pressn AP poll
but I looked at the schedule and had UGA 2nd in the East and
they slipped to 10-3 (#13).The next 2 yrs they were 8-5 (NR) &
6-7 (NR).The '10 team had 4 net close losses.In '11 UGA only
had 12 ret st'rs but I called them one of my MIT and they were
my upset pick to win the East (no LSU, Bama or Ark). UGA did
indeed get to the SEC Title game but after dropping the SEC
Champandtheirbowl,theywere10-4(#19).LYUGAwaspressn
#6 and won their first 4 all by 21+.They got pastTenn 51-44 with
Tenn's final 3 poss all being TO's but then were destroyed by
SCar (down 35-0 before td w/1:55 left). They barely got past UK
29-24andweren'tgivenmuchhopevsFla.DJWilliamscalledthe
team out prior to the game and UGA won thanks to 6 UF TO's.
They continued on with 4 straight great defensive efforts (beat
Miss, Aub, GS & GT by a comb 162-34).However, they all'd 26
FD's per/gm in their final 3 and finished tied with Florida in the
East.In the SEC Champ gm they were stopped deep inTide terr
at the end coming up just short 32-28.While trailing Neb after
3Q's, they rebounded for a 14 pt bowl win and finished #5.TY
UGA has 9 ret sts on off but just 3 on D.They were +108.5 ypg
in SEC play (#3) but did benefit from +11 TO's and their Stock
Market rating is -4.5. UGA does draw LSU out of the West but
only has 3 true road SEC games and gets S Carolina at home.
They get my call to win the SEC East.

once again the Bulldogs surprised but this time in a good way as
they actually improved their rushing (183 ypg) and their ypc of

int). LY Murray threw for 3,893 increasing his % to 64.5 and
his ratio to 36-10 (109 gross rush).Murray had a career low vs
SCar (11β31β109) but bounced back the next gm with a career
high vs UK (30-38β427, 4 td) and in the bowl vs Neb tied his
high again (427, 5 td). As a true, 6'3" Hutson Mason (PS#43)
became the 2nd QB in NCAA history to throw a td on his first
career snap (9-17-102-1-0) and in '11 threw for 254 (60%, 2-0).
LY they wanted to RS him to gain some separation between

Crowell(PS#4).Whenhealthy(oftinj)hewassolidandledw/850
(4.6, 2ndTm Fr AA).LY Crowell was kicked off the tm during the
summer. Many across the country said that UGA was in trouble
without their top rusher but I pointed out that they were actually
in BETTER shape as the starting job would be held for a 2nd
straight year by a true frosh as they now had 2 solid recruits in
KeithMarshall(PS#2)andToddGurley(PS#19)aswellasSoph
Ken Malcome (PS#37, 174 '11). Gurley and Marshall were so
impressive the term "Gurshall" was formed (last names comb
and a reminder of Herschel Walker). The Gurshall combo was
the most productive frosh duo in UGA history topping Thomas
Brown and Danny Ware in '04 (1567). Marshall had three 100
yd gms and finished with 759 (6.5!). Gurley (1st Tm SEC) got
58 carries to Marshall's 17 in the final 3 and became just the
2nd UGA true frosh RB (Walker '80) to top 1,000 (1385, 6.2!)
and the duo comb for 25 td's.TY they lose Malcome (272, 4.8),
Richard Samuel (65, 3.6) and FB Alexander Ogletree (2 st, 3
att). Adding depth are FB's Merritt Hall (5'11" 238 So, 6 st LY),
Quayvon Hicks (6'2" 262 So, PS#70) and Dominic Bryan (6'0"
235 rFr, PS#118) While it will be tough to top LY's stats, this
unit clearly has the most they have had in years.
RECEIVERS - In '11 UGA had to replace one of the top
WR's in college football in AJ Green (#1DC) along with their #2

leading returnees being WR's Tavarres King (PS#6, 504, 18.7),

Only the third time in 19 years UGA has opened the ssn on the road (L to Okl St in β09 & W
vs Clemson in β03). Bulldogs had won 12 straight ssn openers through β08 but split the L/4.
LY was the first time both were ranked in the Top 10 (#5 & #6). It was over early as SC led
21-0 in the first 10 min. UGA scored with 1:55 to avoid getting shutout for the first time s/β95.
First meeting.Last year they both played Florida Atlantic and while NT won 20-14 with
a 6 yd edge the Bulldogs showed no mercy running up a school record 713 yds.
Georgia has dropped the L/2 falling 20-13 in β09 and 42-10 in the SEC Champ in β11. UGA
dominated the title game early holding LSU to seven 3&outs but a LSU PR td turned the tide.
The Bulldogs have taken 3 straight while the home team in 5-1.LTH the Georgia D held
Tennessee to 269 yards with 76 yds coming on their only td drive with under 3 mins left.
LY this was Missouriβs first ever SEC game.It was scoreless after 1Q and 3-3 with under 2:00 left in
the 2Q.Each scored a td before HT and MU took a 17-9 3Q lead before UGA outscored them 32-3.
The Bulldogs have won 10 straight in Nashville. LTH Georgia led wire-to-wire with 16
pts being their largest margin. UGA was +3 in TOβs but settled for 6 fg attβs missing 2.
