A Rare collection of coins from Japan
57 JAPAN. MANEN ERA, 1860-62.
AV OBAN (10 RYO),
Oval with horizontal indentations and patterned security edge; black ink calligraphy with four mon stamps. Three vertical stamps and three moneyers' stamps lower left on reverse. (c.112.8grams), 135mm x 80mm. Rare. The oban is in well preserved condition showing small amounts of ink loss and surface wear, a dark test mark on upper right of reverse, also a small file mark on security edge c.13mm. (one coin)
A similar example can be found in the catalogue of the Japanese Coin Collection at the British Museum. The founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Leyasu, established
a gold, silver and bronze denomination system that lasted until the Meiji restoration ended the Shogunate's rule. The largest denomination in this coinage system was the Oban gold piece, which was typically used as a special reward or a gift, rather than day to day transactions.
The piece on offer is from the Manen era, the final era before the Meiji Restoration and after US Commodore Matthew Perry helped to end Japan's isolationist policies under the Shogunate. The design for this coin features the Kiri crest of the office of the Prime Minister of Japan. The symbol - or mon - is the paulownia flower, and is known as the Princess Tree in Japan. An interesting feature of this piece is its' security edge, which prevents any unscrupulous individuals from shaving or filing the edge of the coin.
This rare coin highlights the following collection of Japanese coins, which were amassed over the last twenty
or thirty years by a collector who has a particular interest in Japanese coins, art and antiques. This particular piece was purchased from a private estate sale in the 1990's by the present vendor and it is believed not to ha

65 Squadron R.F.C. on 23rd April 1918.
The paperwork, various passes and original documents as well as various back-up documentation are bound into a dedicated ‘presentation’ document.
Estimate £1,800 - £2,800

Duke’s

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von
Richthofen
(The Red Baron)
..was shot down and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains perhaps the most widely known fighter pilot of all time .
Richthofen received a fatal wound just after 11:00 am on 21 April 1918, while flying over Morlancourt Ridge, near the Somme River. 49°56′0.60′′N 2°32′ 43.71′′E
At the time, the Baron had been pursuing (at very low altitude) a Sopwith Camel piloted by a novice Canadian pilot, Lieutenant Wilfrid "Wop" May of No. 209 Squadron, Royal Air Force. In turn, the Baron was spotted and briefly attacked by a Camel piloted by a school friend (and flight commander) of May's, Canadian Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown, who had to dive steeply at very high speed to intervene, and then had to climb steeply to avoid hitting the ground. Richthofen turned to avoid this attack, and then resumed his pursuit of May.
It was almost certainly during this final stage in his pursuit of May that a single .303 bullet hit Richthofen, damaging his heart and lungs so severely that it must have caused a quick death.
in the last seconds of his life, he managed retain sufficient control to make a rough "landing"( 49°55′56′′N 2°32′16′′E) in a field on a hill near the Bray- Corbie road, just north of the village of Vaux-sur-Somme, in a sector con- trolled by the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).[ Several witnesses, including
Gunner Ernest W. Twycross, Gunner George Ridgway and Sergeant Ted Smout of the Australian Medical Corps, all later claimed to have been the first man to reach the triplane and reported various versions of Richthofen's last words, generally including the word "kaputt".

No Woof Anti Bark Collars and Anti Bark Sprays
http://www.dominateinternetmarketing.co.uk/brochure/Antibarkcollar/Antibarkco...
This painless and effective anti-bark spray collar stops unwanted barking from your dog very quickly.
The ultimate in bark control and anti bark training. These collars are a great way to stop unecessary barking from your dog.
Annoying barking can be a thing of the past
These collars are 88% effective in stopping barking.
For a dog to bark is quite natural and we should not seek to eliminate all barking. However, barking can be a nuisance to yourself and to your neighbours.
Excessive barking is a problem which can be overcome.
Basically any anti bark device is based on an "instant and consistent" warning system. The moment your dog steps out of line, he will undergo the consequences and this will happen any time he is wearing the collar, for the whole duration of it.
This offers a huge advantage to those dog owners who spend most of the day outside of the house and can't be around the whole time to train their dog to stop barking.
Also, an anti bark device is far more consistent than most people and will instantly communicate with your dog that what he is doing is undesired behavior.

A similar example can be found in the catalogue of the
Japanese Coin Collection at the British Museum. The
founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Leyasu, established
a gold, silver and bronze denomination system that lasted
until the Meiji restoration ended the Shogunate's rule. The
largest denomination in this coinage system was the Oban
gold piece, which was typically used as a special reward or
a gift, rather than day to day transactions.
The piece on offer is from the Manen era, the final era
before the Meiji Restoration and after US Commodore
Matthew Perry helped to end Japan's isolationist policies
under the Shogunate. The design for this coin features the
Kiri crest of the office of the Prime Minister of Japan. The
symbol - or mon - is the paulownia flower, and is known
as the Princess Tree in Japan. An interesting feature of this
piece is its' security edge, which prevents any unscrupulous
individuals from shaving or filing the edge of the coin.
This rare coin highlights the following collection of
Japanese coins, which were amassed over the last twenty
or thirty years by a collector who has a particular interest
in Japanese coins, art and antiques. This particular piece
was purchased from a private estate sale in the 1990's by
the present vendor and it is believed not to have exchanged
hands since 1928.

This medal with others are purported to have been given

as she (Chamberlain) obtained for the Empress certain
pictures in Windsor Castle.
J. Chamberlain was the third great grandmother of H.C.C
Batten who was given the medals in 1906.
IVANOVICH BETSKOJ was a Russian school reformer
who served as Catherine the Great's advisor on
education, and President of the Imperial Academy of the
Arts for thirty years (1764-94). He established Russia's
first unified system of public education and documented
the above medal:
'On the obverse side of the medal was depicted a half
length portrait of Catherine the Great, while on the
reverse we can see the personification of the Christian
symbol of faith (the creed) under the veil, who is
holding a cross in her right hand. The Faith is leaning
on the pedestal of the church building and commands
the humanity presented as a young woman. To pick up
the child and to bring it to the charity based Sovereign
House (Moscow Foundling Home) Above the visible
words of the Saviour, 'Ye Shall Live Also' St.John14:19,
on the bottom... is the line 'September, 1st Day, in 1763.
Catherine the Great was presented with five golden, two

275 RUSSIA, COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL.
Transportation of the granite monolith for the monument
to Peter I, 1770, by J.C.G. Jaeger.
Obverse: Laureate bust of Catherine II left, mantled and
wearing star and ribbon: above the portrait signature of
engraver J.C.G. Jaegar.
Reverse: A panoramic view of the transport of the
granite block with Tsarina, workers, and spectators.
Provenance: The Batten Family, Church Farm,
Ryme Intrinseca, Dorset.
This medal with others are purported to have been given
to Mrs Haynes granddaughter J. Chamberlain, who was a
librarian to George III by Catherine II Empress of Russia,
as she (Chamberlain) obtained for the Empress certain
pictures in Windsor Castle.
J. Chamberlain was the third great grandmother of H.C.C
Batten who was given the medals in 1906.
The reverse of this medal is based on an engraving by
I.F.Schley of the drawings by Y.M.Felten. The block of
granite used as a pedestal for the monument was called
'The Thunder Stone', and was considered to be the
largest stone ever moved by man. Its weight was
calculated at 15,000 tonne, it was moved 6km overland to
the Gulf of Finland and then by barge to St. Petersburg.
The project was considered a historic engineering feat,
all work was done by men, no animals or machines were
used in the transport of the stone. The engineer in charge
was a Greek serving as a Leftenant Colonel in the Russian
Army, Marinos Carburis. He was the first Greek to hold a
diploma in engineering.
The medal is believed to be one of the finest of the few
known and has minimal wear appearing in its original
state with proof-like fields and finely engraved frosted
relief. The medal is being offered contained in what
appears to be its original turned wood box.

After making a secret rendezvous with British agents in
Italy, he flew the missile back to Britain so it could be
probed and studied by experts.
During the Campaign of Burma, Flight Lt. Paige flew
on many missions, including dropping supplies to the
14th Army. On one occasion when flying through a
severe monsoon storm, his aircraft was thrown upside
down after battling over the Arakan Yomas. The aircraft

301 A SECOND WORLD WAR
GALLANTRY GROUP OF MEDALS,
comprising George medal, 1939/45 Star, France and
Germany star, Defence medal, Service medal, George
VI coronation medal, 1937, and long service and good
conduct medal. Awarded to Regiment Sergeant Major
Ernest Joseph Legg. 5719780. With a collection of related
ephemera including photographs, letters, newspaper
cuttings, release book, certificate of service and related
items.
The late Sergeant Major Ernest Joseph Legg enlisted in
the Queen's Royal Regiment, Dorchester, in 1920. He
went on to serve throughout the Second World War and
was discharged in 1951 after displaying great courage and
a fine example to his men.
Legg was awarded the George Medal in 1941 for his
heroic actions during an incident which saw several
servicemen killed and others wounded. Somewhere
in Britain a group of infantry accidentally entered
a minefield intended to trap invaders. Some mines
exploded and all around the ground was thickly sown
with other unexploded mines. In the middle of the field
lay a wounded man and several dead. With complete
disregard to their own safety Sergeant Major Legg and a
fellow Lance Sergeant Hardy (also awarded the George
medal), and other servicemen displayed exceptional
courage in recovering bodies from the danger area of the
minefield.
A newspaper cutting included within the lot from the
1940's regarding the event reads: They both carried out
their task with extreme coolness and courage and their
bearing throughout was of the highest order. In a letter
written to Sergeant Major Legg dated 1941 congratulating
him on the George medal award, a paragraph in the letter
reads: It will be sometime before I forget the sight that
day!
Provenance: The Legg family by descent.

the bullets becoming lodged into a tobacco box. He was
also wounded by a shot to his right buttock, which, whilst
recovering in hospital Eric recieved a comical postcard

402 SECOND LIEUTENANT JOHN
HENRY STRODE BATTEN,
the King's Regiment, Liverpool. A pair of Queen's and
King's South Africa medals, with clasps, Cape Colony,
Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Trans Vaal,
South Africa, 1901 and 1902. This collection of medals,
dress uniform, court sword and engraved cigar box are
included with a letter written by Second Lieutenant
Batten during the defence of Ladysmith, on December
1st 1899.
The letter, written in pencil, reads:
My Dear Grandpa, I am writing this to you during the
siege of Ladysmith, or rather, I trust, the last few days of
the siege. We have been shut up here since the 2nd of
Nov, and it has been a very momentous affair, as since
that date we have been completely cut off from the rest
of the world, so have no papers or letters. A few runners
have I believed managed to get through the Boer lines
with dispatches at odd times. We are now expecting daily
to be relieved... I expect soon to hear of a big fight outside
here and then relief. To describe the siege, it is enough to
say that one day is exactly the same as another. We get up
at three thirty am, parade at four am, stand about ready
to march off to assist attack ‘til daylight has fairly dawned.
The rest of the day we build and repair our fortifications...
and lie under shields constructed against
the enemy shells. Our battalion find three companies for
outpost duty when we remain shut up in trenches for five
days until relieved. Am on outpost duty now. Sometimes
we often have to work at night as it is pretty safe from
shelling. Then lately we have been chiefly suffering from
having nothing to do all day, as the walls are all built so
we lie in the trenches and chase away the flies which are
a regular plague here. I am glad to say I am fit and well.
Was under fire for the first time at the battle of Intintaymi.
Felt a bit shaky at first but soon got used to it. Boers have
been shelling the camp daily (except Sundays). Since
the beginning of the siege we have lost one Sergeant and
nine men. It is surprising how little damage their shells
have done considering the number of shells that have
been dropped. Grub and drink are getting scarce. Find
the heat terrific and it is not mid-summer yet. Will write
again better, but thought you would like to hear a word so
please excuse the scrawl. With best love to Uncle Henry
and Yourself, Your Affectionate Grandson, J. H. Strode
Batten.
The fascinating and historical letter is contained in the
original envelope with Yeovil postmark. The uniform and
hat contained in original tin trunks.
This fascinating collection of important military history
has been well preserved for generations.
