The pharmaceutical industry is under pressure from payers that demand lower prices and patients that require more information. Hence, they want pharmaceuticals to deliver real value. I argue that such value is embedded in the experiences of the medical encounter and suggest that pharmaceuticals may innovate these experiences through patient portals. From my perspective, the threat of payers to collect more data can be turned into an opportunity for the patients to improve their lives. The strategic fit of patient portals is in turn contingent on the competences of the pharmaceuticals and their customers, however regulated by payers in the healthcare network.
