Sugar Mom's: Mom Knows Best - Philadelphia downtown
bars
It's the best-protected, most fortified haven for social beings in all of Philadelphia. The party people's
bomb shelter, if you will. Sugar Mom's, located on the very small and easily overlooked Church
Street between 2nd and 3rd in Old City, is reminiscent of the speakeasies of the 1920's; so well
hidden that if you were to bring a date to its door it would be as if you were bragging that you know
how to find it.
Descending stone steps into a dimly lit enclave, your maturity in years is challenged at the sight of
childhood playthings such as a hockey foosball table, old school standing arcade games and framed
wall hangings of favorite cartoon robots. The seating arrangements, more haphazard than
deliberately planned consist of comfortably weathered couches, epic round tables, a mini grand
piano and decommissioned bumper cars.
This Philadelphian gem is stomping ground to patrons of every sort. Punks consort with Hip Hop
heads, and hipsters wax intellectual with hooligans while suits and musicians hit on the cute but
ever-so unattainable tattooed indie girls. The sort of "any hour is a good hour" bar, Sugar Mom's will
play the roles of calm restaurant and happening hot spot with equal success.
Open from 12pm to 2am, Wednesday through Saturday, food is served with both carnivore and
herbivore in mind, to the tune of everything from Sham 69 to RUN DMC, The Animals or Eric B. As
with many bars in the general vicinity, you must arrive at least 2 hours prior if you wish to hear your
juke box selections by the end of the evening. It can prove frustrating. On the eve of First Friday in
Philadelphia, Sugar Mom's proves the place to be, but claustrophobics beware. The low ceilings and
dark atmosphere quickly turn from magnetic to repulsive when 80 bodies are added to the room.Â
Nevertheless, Sugar Mom's, clearly a supporter of Philadelphian tradition, is one of only a handful of
establishments in the area to serve fairly priced Pabst Blue Ribbon. If you don't get frisky for
whiskey, you will do just fine with a Pabst Pounder served for just $1.00 before 11:00pm on Friday
and Saturday.
Whether you're on the prowl to meet new people, lay back and relax on comfy couches, or end the
night in an affable area, the fine people at Sugar Moms' will be so good to you you'll find yourself
demanding more from YOUR mother.
