SCENE 1
Interviewer and interviewee
INTERVIEWER
Hello and welcome to BBC News. I am here
with BBCs very own HOMECP Dave Smith.
INTERVIEWER
Hi Dave
DAVE SMITH
Hi, thanks for having me. It’s great to be
on the other side of the camera (chuckles)
INTERVIEWER
Yes, I imagine it’s strange. Tell are
lovely viewer what it is exactly what you
do here on the BBC.
DAVE SMITH
My role is that I am the head of muti-cam
productions here on the BBC. My job is to
direct the cameras to make sure I capture
the action otherwise I’ll face the sack.
Interviewer and interviewee
INTERVIEWER
So… you must work on so many shows. What’s
been your most challenging production of
the year?
DAVE SMITH
Ohhh…hard question. Defiantly filming a
Tennis match at Wimbledon. As we have to
record everything in a van. It’s very
tight. Terrible if you’re claustrophobic.
3. 3
INTERVIEWER
Oh…really. Tell us more
DAVE SMITH
There is four trucks in the car park,
which control the cameras. However within
them there is one grey truck, this is
where I am, I have to direct my colleagues
to switch to which clips to record.
INTERVIEWER
Wow my notes tell me there is 32 screens
to choose from. What a responsibility. How
many cameras?
DAVE SMITH
Yes its one hell of a responsibility, I’m
surprised I haven’t been sacked yet.
(Chuckles to himself) Over the course of
an event we use a total of 80 cameras.
INTERVIEWER
Wow, that’s crazy. Why that many cameras?
DAVE SMITH
Well especially in tennis it’s so fast
paced, the tennis players certainly don’t
help us, and we have to make sure that we
cover every angle.
INTERVIEWER
Ahhh…So interesting. So Dave what visuals
do you use in these productions?
DAVE SMITH
So for a tennis match we would include the
scoreboard, in Wimbledon colours of
course, this adds to the intensity of the
match as well as allowing people to see
the score anytime without waiting till we
cut to the image of the scoreboard.
4. 4
INTERVIEWER
Wow. Thanks for that Dave.
DAVE SMITH
You’re welcome, anytime
INTERVIWER
Have done any live shows in your time here
at the BBC?
DAVE SMITH
I have done a variety shows along with
game shows and a few chat shows.
INTERVIEWER
Oh wow, the whole kerboodle the. So Dave,
how would filming something like Children
in need, vary from filming something at
Wimbledon?
DAVE SMITH
Well it’s harder as the tempos always
changing. One minute you filming the
presenters talking about truly sad moment
so you have to slow down the tempo and
then an act will come on. Such as a dance
group and then its hands on deck as you
have to capture peoples movements. Unlike
a tennis match wear it’s all one pace and
usually you can just shoot a wide angle
shot a few yards back behind a player and
just switch camera angles a few times each
half.
INTERVIWER
Oh interesting. In a show such as children
and need how do you get these delicate
messages across to the audience and
encourage them to donate?
5. 5
DAVE SMITH
We have to slow down the pace at which we
are filming. We can do this by carrying
out a shot for longer than usual. We try
to remind the audience to donate by using
visuals such as Pugsey bear in the top
left hand corner as well as the number to
donate appearing even couple of minutes.
INTERVIEWER
Thanks for that. How would you suggest
that the multi camera set up interests the
viewers at home?
DAVE SMITH
The multi camera set up allows the viewers
at home to feel like they are actually at
the venue.
INTERVIWER
Ahh that is very interesting, I would have
never thought of that. What are the
disadvantages of filming in a live event?
DAVE SMITH
It’s hard to wire up as you have to figure
out how a wire can become a potential
hazard to a person in the audience. It is
also hard to move around at people are
everywhere.
INTERVIEWER
Thanks for that Dave
DAVE SMITH
You’re welcome
6. 6
INTERVIWER
So Dave do you mind explaining the process
of muti camera simultaneous recording.
DAVE SMITH
Certainly, firstly for this to work there
needs to be a lot of crew involved. At
least two of the crew must be at the
mixing desk. This is where everything is
recorded also the people on the desk can
chose which camera to record from at
different times. This would all be
impossible without communication, the
whole crew are hooked up with Via Comms so
the whole crew can give and receive
instructions.
INTERVIEWER
Wow you make it sound so simple.
DAVE SMITH
It is when you’ve do it for a couple of
years (chuckles)
INTERVIEWER
You’ve got a point there. How would you
film a broadcast like this?
DAVE SMITH
It’s a pretty similar set up and much
easier as you don’t need to switch cameras
as much this helps keeps the mood serious.
INTERVIEWER
Ahh thanks that’s so interesting. That’s
all we have got time for. Thanks for
coming Dave.
DAVE SMITH
My pleasure.
