Global jewelry buyer CIRCA recently dropped $50,000 on a bracelet owned by Bernie Madoff, the fallen financier convicted of orchestrating a giant Ponzi technique. But the jewelry-buying and jewelry wholesale company is not sitting on the piece for long. It will be reselling the bracelet--and hopefully erasing any negative vibes--by donating a portion of the profits to charity. CIRCA purchased the Madoff-owned Art Deco diamond and emerald bracelet at a Nov. 14 U.S. Marshals-held jewelry auction designed to benefit Madoff's investor victims. Made in 1925, the piece has four emeralds surrounded by approximately 25 carats of diamonds, and CIRCA snagged it for four times its appraised value of $25,000. "We felt obliged to participate in this event to help Bernie Madoff's lots of victims reclaim a small part of what they lost in the largest Ponzi technique in history," Chris Del Gatto, co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of CIRCA, said in a media release. "Some of these victims have come to CIRCA because they unfortunately have been made to sell their fashion jewelry. As someone who has witnessed the devastation that lots of of these people feel, I think it is fitting that Madoff's estate be sold for their benefit." CIRCA will donate a portion of resale proceeds to the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation in Florida, which lost $2 million by investing with Madoff, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which CIRCA has supported since 2002.
