Definition of process documentation
‘Process documentation is an approach
that tracks events and happenings,
discerns underlying reasons and
highlights issues that need action’.
5. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
Major events documented
Learning Alliance meetings
Pilot data collections in country rural and
periurban areas
M&L process: Interviews with 6 LA members
and 2 non LA members
Work session with LA member
Representative of the Ministry of Land and Decentralisation
6. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
Learning Alliance meetings
Lessons from 2 Learning Alliance meetings
There is a great interest in the WASHCost
project in Burkina
Irregular representation from member
institutions means ceaselessly repeating
introduction of project to participant
Lessons from 3 Research / Task Force group meetings
Local institutions are indispensable in
developing a viable research methodology
and in accessing data in the field
acting as intermediaries
7. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
Pilot data collection in rural and
periurban areas
Main lessons from 2 pilot data collections in rural and
peri-urban areas
Effective process documentation requires one to
be in the field: we cannot document a process
while standing outside of it
Effective involvement of rural and peri-urban
populations requires additional communication
and advocacy to inform them of research
objectives and relevance for them
The time of year (eg rainy season) significantly
influences the progress and outcome of research
8. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
M&L process documentation
Interview key LA actors
(Country Coordinator and Research Director)
Lessons:
Setting up the LA and/or Task Force is
a process
LA management: Keeping actors
involved in the framework has been a
success so far but remains a major
challenge
9. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
M&L process documentation
Lessons from Interviews with 6 LA members
and 2 non-LA members
LA members have increasing willingness to
be involved in WASHCost activities
Non LA members approve the WASHCost
approach and are interested
WASHCost is expected to increase its
visibility in the sector
Face-to-face interview provides warm
feedback on functioning of the LA
10. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
Contact with the LA members
1 work session with LA member
Representative Ministry of Land and Decentralisation
There is an ongoing decentralisation of water and
sanitation facilities and services management
responsibilities at country level.
The WASHCost team is encouraged to increase
contact with grassroots (to widespread the
WASHCost approach) and local elected bodies (to
access research data).

Analysis
In Aouréma (a village in the North), September pilot
started with the quantification of water volumes
served from the stand pipes and boreholes.
Water is sold at all standpipes but some users lack
means to afford the quantities they need.
Though water is free at boreholes, people find it
easier to fetch from a well than using all their
strengths in pumping (a borehole).
Only one person can fetch water at a time at the
borehole instead of three or more at the well,
according to its size
15. 20091103 WASHCost Burkina Faso
Analysis
Well water has the best taste for some people
River water just requires you to bend and take it
A user may take standpipe water to cook, wash
dishes and drink but use well, river or rain water
(from sheets) to wash cloths and water animals
Standpipes are attended most in the dry season
As a consequence the team improvised a
questionnaire to assess water taken from wells
