15 Acts to Celebrate Earth Day 2020 Virtually?
1. By Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi, Founder & Managing Trustee
Compiled by a Corporate Volunteer
2. A journey to the beginning of Earth Day
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on
April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated
globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.
3. What is the significance of Earth Day?
Earth Day is a day dedicated to increasing
awareness about the Earth, its issues and
problems. Today, more than 1 billion
people now participate in Earth Day
activities each year, making it the largest
civic observance in the world.
The Earth Day Network India Trust
launched in 2010 to conduct programs to
reach out to varied demographic profiles
across the length and breadth of the
country—from those at the grassroots to
policymakers
4. Golden Jubilee
Earth Day 2020 is the
50th Anniversary of Earth
Day. Celebrations will
include activities such as
the Great Global
Cleanup, Citizen
Science, Advocacy,
Education, and art.
5. What is the relevance of the theme to
current scenario ?
The theme of Earth Day 2020 is “climate action.” It will be
celebrated with The Great Global Cleanup, a day dedicated to
removing trash from green spaces and urban centers alike.
EarthDay.org hopes will be the largest volunteer event in
history.
The scientific evidence is clear and irrefutable — human
activity is causing our planet to warm at an alarming
rate. International bodies of scientists have warned that we
have just over a decade to halve our emissions to avoid the
most devastating impacts of climate change on our food supply,
national security, global health, extreme weather, and more.
7. Virtual
Celebrations
This will be the saddest

8. WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 1
Document Your Air Quality with the EC2020
App
In partnership with the Wilson Center
and the U.S. State Department, Earth
Day Network has created a new air
quality recording tool: the Earth
Challenge 2020 app (EC2020).
To get started, all one needs is a
smartphone. With EC2020, users can
record images of the horizon to be
added to a global database of similar
air quality recordings. These data
points will form a global map of
readings, showing how air quality
varies around the planet and how
human activity shapes these trends
9. MAKE YOUR NEXT MEAL PLANT-BASED
What we eat has affects climate change and
human health. But eating a plant-based diet
and avoiding animal products relieves our
planet of the burdens of animal agriculture,
a huge contributor to ecological destruction
and climate change.
Did you know that animal agriculture
requires huge amounts of land and water? A
single pound of beef requires 1,800 gallons
of water. On top of depleting valuable
resources, producing meat contributes a
staggering level of greenhouse gas emissions,
which drive climate change.
While agriculture generally accounts for
roughly 25% of all human greenhouse gas
emissions, animal agriculture is responsible
for nearly 80% of these harmful emissions.
What we eat is important. For your next
meal, we urge you to make a climate
conscious choice and eat plant-based.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 2
10. BECOME A CITIZEN SCIENTIST
Use the Earth Challenge 2020 app
to gather critical environmental
data near you
Earth Challenge 2020 is the app
fueling the world’s largest citizen
science effort, available on
Android and iOS devices.
Earth Challenge lets you gather
important scientific data near you.
It has two elements for you to
measure — air quality and plastic
pollution — with more on the way.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 3
11. Create the Earth
Art works in ways that science
alone cannot, making climate
change personal, engaging people’s
hearts and inspiring the will to
change.
Art has the power to reach people
personally, establishing a deeper
understanding and emotional
connection with what is happening
to our planet.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 4
12. HELP TO PROTECT SPECIES BY TAKING A
PESTICIDE PLEDGE
Pollinators are critically important to our
global food production and nutritional
security. Estimates suggest that pollinators
directly contribute US$235–$577 billion to
global food production each year. Without
pollinators, many of the foods we depend on
would become scarce, putting life on our
planet at risk.
Bees are the best documented species, and
reports from beekeepers and scientific surveys
estimate dramatic declines in bee populations
around the world. In fact, 40 percent of
pollinator species — such as bees and other
flying insects like Earth Day Network’s 2020
invertebrate species, the Monarch butterfly —
are facing extinction across the globe. A
recent study indicated there was a 76% loss of
flying insect biomass in the last three
decades.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 5
13. MAKE CLIMATE A CLASS
From primary education to higher
education, educators can prepare
students to thrive in a world
impacted by climate change.
This Earth Month, educators can take
immediate steps to prepare their
students by dedicating a whole or
partial class to discussing
environmental issues in their topic
of study.
Mark your commitment with us, and
add your voice to the growing call for
integrating environmental and
climate topics in classrooms around
the world.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 6
14. ADVOCATE FOR CLIMATE ACTION AT
YOUR UNIVERSITY
THE CAMPUS CLIMATE PROJECT
Colleges and universities are leaders in
sustainability education, research and
operations. Fifty years after the
environmental movement started on
college campuses, we must reflect on the
role of higher education in the global fight
against climate change.
To create a unified student voice, help us
map how campuses are doing in this
fight.
Ask yourself…
IS YOUR CAMPUS DOING ENOUGH TO
PREPARE STUDENTS TO ADDRESS GLOBAL
ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES?
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 7
15. START A COMMUNITY CLIMATE DISCUSSION
MAKE A WHATSAPP POST ON FAMILY
OR COMMUNITY GROUPS TO TALK
ABOUT CLIMATE ACTION.
Climate change is not somewhere in
the future; it’s happening now. We’re
seeing its effects in hotter days,
shorter winters and fiercer storms.
But you don’t have to face these
things alone.
Many experience climate change
locally. Storms, heat waves, floods
and wildfires happen outside our
doors. But we can work together to
solve these problems.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 8
16. Calculate your Plastic Footprint
Plastic pollution is one of the most
important environmental problems that we
face today. It impacts the environment and
our health and wellbeing. We have all
contributed to this problem – mostly
unknowingly – and we must work to reduce
and ultimately to End Plastic Pollution.
But as they say, you can’t manage what you
can’t measure. That’s where this comes in —
Use this calculator to learn about how many
plastic items you consume and discard every
year.
For every material listed, you’ll see three
boxes. In the first box, fill in your daily
consumption of the specific item. The
second box will auto-populate with your
total consumption every year.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 9
17. SOUND THE CALL FOR CLIMATE ACTION
Join us today, Wednesday, April 22 (12
p.m. EST) to Sound the Call for Climate
Action.
Earth Day Network is joining Hazon, The
Jewish Lab for Sustainability, in their
global mobilization, Sound the Call for
Climate Action.
Following coronavirus social distancing
measures, people across the globe will
show unity for climate action from home.
They will do this by publicly ringing bells,
blowing shofars, or whatever their faith
tradition calls them to do, signaling to the
world that now is the time to act on
climate.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 10
18. ASK YOUR FAITH LEADER TO SIGN THE
CLIMATE ACTION PLEDGE
Faith leaders and communities can
use Earth Day to advance solutions
that protect our environment, for us,
and for future generations.
Whether youth or adult, lay leaders
have the power to influence
respected community leaders and
drive public option.
Join Earth Day and help us achieve
bold goals that make our
communities, and planet, more
sustainable. Together, we can create
a global movement of healthy, safe
and united communities for all of
God’s creation.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 11
19. REACH YOUR REPRESENTATIVE
Every elected representative —
from a local official to a national
leader — should put their
constituents’ needs first. Tell yours
that the health of people and the
planet should be the top priority.
I'LL CONTACT MY REPRESENTATIVE
Join others and record your action!
Sign up for email updates if you

20. COMMIT TO VOTE EARTH
PLEDGE TO VOTE EARTH
Vote Earth is a global initiative
that mobilizes millions of people
to demonstrate their concern for
our planet. By rejecting inaction
and demanding change at the
polls, we have the power to drive
change.
In a democracy, every voice
matters — and things only change
when you make yourself heard.
Will you pledge to vote for
environmental progress in your
next election?
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 13
21. GET 3 FRIENDS TO COMMIT TO VOTE
We face an environmental crisis that
demands strong public leadership.
To defend our future and protect our
planet, we must demand that
policymakers do more to bring the world
to a net-zero carbon future. Voting
citizens are the best solution to political
inaction.
Vote Earth is a global initiative that
mobilizes millions of people to
demonstrate their concern for our planet.
As voting citizens, we have enormous
power to drive change by making our
voices heard.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY? ACT 14
22. Plan to Plant a Forest
THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS
THE SECOND BEST TIME IS TODAY.
Since you can’t plant a sapling during
the Covid times therefore make a
plan
Plan to plant local species during
upcoming monsoon
