2. Yātrā (Travelling) Muhūrta - Introduction and Application
Yātrā (Travelling) Muhūrta – Planned
Muhūrta concept means auspicious time to begin an event, based on auspicious combinations of Paṁcāṁga,
the five elements namely Vāra, Tithi, Karaṇa, Nakṣatra and Yoga. In Yātrā Muhūrta some other factors are
also considered like Kāla Rāhū, Yoginī, Diśā Śūla, Dikaśūla and the Moon Sign etc.
Travelling commence from Svastika (Diagram), look for the direction of the arriving place. Draw a chart of
starting travel time from the staying point (City/Country) and follow the considerations specified for the
travelling direction. For example travelling from New Delhi, India to New York, USA falls in West direction.
Tuesday (Kāla Rāhū), Friday and Sunday (Diśā Śūla) and 6th and 14th Tithi are inauspicious. Moon in Gemini,
Libra and Aquarius Signs is auspicious for West direction. According to some regional believes inauspicious
‘Yoga’ and ‘Rāhū Kāla’ etc. , some other factors are also considered in Muhūrata.
Yātrā (Travelling) Muhūrta – Urgent
There is one more method given in the Vedic literature for the emergency travelling, simply based on the Sun
and Moon Nakṣatra. When there is no time to plan with all the above given factors, it requires only Nakṣatra
consideration. All twenty eight Nakṣatra are categorized in four “Paṁtha”. Look at the Nakṣatra category of
both the planets and match for the auspicious travelling time.
Some other Practices
To make Muhūrata more comfortable some elders only consider Moon direction, facing or on the right.
Some exclusively believe in breathing flow (nostril), normally travelling in Left flow is considered good.
Forward Left or Right footstep matching to Nostril Left or Right flow is another option. When breath is
flowing right side, put first right step ahead and vice versa to start journey. The logic is simple - tune up the
body and the mind.
