2. Final Year BE Academic Project:
“Finite Element Analysis of Shell Structure with Elliptical End Closures”
Cylinders with elliptical end caps are used as pressure vessel and cylindrical container in
many applications. Strength of the pressure vessel is important for design process .Critical stress
analysis to locate the possible failure locations, prediction of critical buckling loads to avoid failure
due to buckling and fracture mechanism analysis of the cylinder with elliptical end closure is the
main focus. Finite Element Model will be developed for the prediction of possible failure locations
by stress analysis, critical buckling loads and prediction of stress intensity factors for a cylinder
with elliptical end closure having an axial crack subjected to internal pressure. The proposed Finite
Element Model is implemented using ANSYS. Static Analysis module is invoked to calculate von-
Misses Stress Contours. Eigen-Buckling module is used to predict critical buckling loads.
