Important documents needed when applying for a tourist visa
1. Important Documents Needed When Applying for a Tourist Visa
American citizens traveling internationally may need a visa to enter foreign countries and some foreign citizens visiting the United States must obtain a tourist visa, as well. The
documentation needed for a tourist visa varies greatly by country, though most share similar basic requirements. The U.S. State Department provides country-specific
information on visa requirements to help travelers determine if they are required to obtain a visa and the type of documentation they must provide to accompany an application.
Passport
All visa applicants must have a current passport, because the visa is stamped onto or affixed to the passport. In most cases, the passport must be valid for at least six months
after the planned travel dates, though this requirement may be waived or extended in certain countries. The passport must a sufficient number of blank pages to be imprinted
with the tourist visa, and some countries require additional pages. If a passport does not have enough blank pages, the U.S. State Department adds pages to American
passports upon request and payment of processing fees.
Photo and Fees
Most countries request a current passport-type photo -- a color photo of the face free of sunglasses, hats or other head coverings. They typically are 2 square inches. You must
pay an application fee to the embassy of consulate where the visa application is processed. Mailed applications typically must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope or an
additional fee to cover mailing costs from the consulate.
Additional Documents
Some countries require additional documentation. For example, Russia requires trip confirmation from a hotel, tour group or Russian host to verify travel plans. Pakistan
requires documentation of service time for those who have been in the military. Though not a common requirement, some countries may request an interview or additional
supporting documentation after officials review a visa application.
Documents for a Tourist Visa to the United States
Tourists visiting the United States who are not from one of the 35 visa-waiver countries listed on the Department of State's website must obtain a visa before entering the
country. All applicants must complete an online tourist visa application form, provide a single passport photo and have a valid passport. Applicants may also have to complete
an interview, provide proof of funds to cover the trip and documentation showing plans to leave the country.
