Sinds eeuwen verbinden de Brugse
Reien de stad met de zee, een garantie
voor welvaart en voorspoed. Internationale
handelslieden bouwden Brugge uit tot
een van de grootste Hanzesteden. In de
15de eeuw floreerde de stad zoals nooit
tevoren. Grote delen van het middel
eeuwse patrimonium bleven nagenoeg
intact. Logisch dus dat Unesco de
volledige binnenstad als werelderfgoed
erkende. Slenterend langs de mysterieuze
reien, de aderen van de stad, duik je
onder in Brugges Gouden Eeuw.

Le commerce international fit de Bruges
une des principales villes hanséatiques.
C’est au 15e siècle que la cité connut son
apogée et depuis lors, la majeure partie
de son patrimoine médiéval est demeurée
pratiquement intacte. C’est donc en toute
logique que l’Unesco a promu la totalité
du centre-ville de Bruges au rang de
patrimoine mondial. En flânant le long
des artères de la cité que sont ses
canaux, vous vous immergerez pleine-

WITH WATER
For centuries the canals of Bruges have
linked the city to the sea, a guarantee
of wealth and prosperity. International
merchants built up Bruges into one of the
largest Hanse cities. In the 15th century
the city flourished as never before. Large
parts of the medieval heritage remained
practically intact. Therefore, it is only
logical that Unesco designated the
entire city centre as a world heritage
site. Saunter along the enigmatic canals,
the arteries of the city, and immerse
yourself in Bruges’ Golden Century.

à Bruges. Ceuxci occupaient des palais

dans le giron de la maison de Bourgogne
que les Primitifs Flamands Jan van Eyck
et Hans Memling purent faire éclore toute
leur créativité. Les Beaux-arts régnaient
en maîtres et, très rapidement, Bruges
devint le lieu de rencontre et d’inspiration
pour d’innombrables artistes. Les chefs-
d’œuvre mondialement réputés et autres
grandes collections s’offrent aujourd’hui à
vos yeux dans un des 28 musées brugeois.

The economic affluence of the 15th
century brought rich merchants to
Bruges. They moved into majestic city
palaces, packed with works of art.
In the wake of the Burgundian dynasty,
the great Flemish primitives, including
Jan vanEyck and Hans Memling found
their creative niches in Bruges. The
fine arts reigned supremely and Bruges
quickly became the meeting place and
source of inspiration for many artists.
The world famous masterpieces and
other top collections can be seen today
in one of the 28 Bruges Museums.

LEVENDE CULTUUR
In het middeleeuwse Brugge vonden
polyfonische kamer- en koormuziek gretig
weerklank. Internationaal befaamde
Vlaamse polyfonisten waren kind aan huis
in de elegante stadspaleizen van de rijke
Bourgondiërs. Sinds de 19de eeuw wordt
die traditie verder gezet in de prachtig
gerestaureerde stadsschouwburg, één
van Europa ’s best bewaarde
stadstheaters. Ook in het eigentijdse
Concertgebouw, een versteende
herinnering aan Brugge 2002 toen Brugge
Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa werd,
wisselen topproducties elkaar af.
UNE CULTURE VIVACE
Dans la Bruges médiévale, la musique de
chambre et les choeurs polyphoniques
faisaient l’objet d’un grand engouement.
Des polyphonistes flamands de renom
mée internationale se sentaient tout à
fait à l’aise dans les palais des riches
Bourguignons. À partir du 19e siècle,
cette tradition s’est poursuivie au Théâtre
Municipal, magnifiquement restauré,
un des théâtres municipaux les mieux
conservés d’Europe. La très contempo
raine Concertgebouw (Salle de concert),
un édifice remarquable en souvenir
de Bruges 2002, lorsque la ville était
Capitale culturelle de l’Europe, propose
également un programme très diversifié
de productions de tout premier plan.
LIVING CULTURE
In medieval Bruges, polyphonic chamber
music and choral music reverberated
vibrantly. Internationally renowned
polyphonists had the run of the elegant
city palaces of the rich Burgundians.
Since the 19th century this tradition
has been continued in the splendidly
restored city theatre, one of Europe’s best
preserved city theatres. And also in the
contemporary Concertgebouw (Concert
Hall), a stone souvenir of Bruges 2002
when Bruges was the Cultural Capital
of Europe, topproductions follow one
after the other.
ZEEHAVEN VAN BRUGGE
Al in de vroege middeleeuwen was
Brugge de belangrijkste zeehaven van
Europa. Honderd jaar geleden knoopte
Brugge opnieuw aan met dit succesvolle
verleden. De haven van Zeebrugge is
uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste
havens van Europa voor containertrafiek
en ook tot een belangrijke gasterminal
voor een groot deel van Europa. Ook voor
cruiseschepen is deze haven, direct aan
de Noordzee gelegen, een uitstekende
aanlegplaats op een boogscheut van het
historische hart van de Werelderfgoedstad
Brugge.
PORT NAVAL DE BRUGES
Dès le haut Moyen-Âge, Bruges était le
principal port maritime d’Europe. Il y a
cent ans, Bruges renoua avec ce passé
glorieux. Le port de Zeebrugge s’est
transformé en l’un des principaux ports
d’Europe pour le trafic des containers
et il fait office d’important terminal de
gaz pour une grande partie de l’Europe.
Pour les bateaux de croisière aussi,
ce port, situé sur la Mer du Nord,
constitue une excellente escale à un
jet de pierre du cœur historique et du
Patrimoine mondial de la ville de Bruges.
SEAPORT BRUGES
Back in the early Middle Ages, Bruges was
one of Europe’s most important sea ports.
One hundred years ago, Bruges revisited
this successful past when it turned the
port of Zeebrugge into one of Europe’s
most significant ports for container traffic
and a considerable gas terminal for a
large part of Europe. For cruise ships
too, this port, right by the North Sea, is
an excellent mooring place at a stone’s
throw from the historic heart of the World
Heritage city of Bruges.

BRUGS VAKMANSCHAP
Toen de Vlaamse lakenindustrie in de 15e
eeuw aan belang inboette, legde Brugge
zich toe op de productie van diverse luxe-
goederen. Gilden en later ook ambachten
controleerden en beschermden de creatie
van deze kwaliteitsproducten. Naast de
paneelschilderkunst van de Vlaamse
Primitieven blonk Brugge uit in de edel-
smidkunst, de productie van verluchte
handschriften, de diamantslijperij en het
kantklossen. Vandaag is de Werelderf-
goedstad nog steeds een internationaal
centrum van verfijnd vakmanschap.
Brugge is toonaangevend op vlak van kal-
ligrafie en letterbeeldhouwen. Daarnaast
leiden twee gereputeerde Brugse scholen
culinair talent op zodat ze gastronomisch
furore maken in Brugge en het verre bui-
tenland. In de hoofdstad van de chocolade
vind je uiteraard ook het kruim van de
artisanale chocolatiers.
LE SAVOIR-FAIRE BRUGEOIS
Lorsque, au 15ième siècle, l’industrie du
drap se mit à perdre des débouchées,
Bruges s’investit dans la production
de divers articles de luxe. Des guildes,
et plus tard aussi des corps de métier,
contrôlèrent et protégèrent la qualité
de ces produits. Outre les tableaux sur
panneau des Primitifs Flamands, Bruges
brilla par l’art de l’orfèvrerie, la production
d’enluminures, la taille du diamant et la
dentelle. Bruges se montre également un
précurseur lorsqu’il s’agit de calligraphie
et de sculpture de lettres. Qui plus est,
deux écoles brugeoises réputées forment
des talents culinaires afin qu’ils fassent
fureur dans la gastronomie, aussi bien à
Bruges que dans les pays les plus reculés
du monde. Dans la capitale du chocolat on
trouve évidemment aussi la crème de la
crème des chocolatiers artisanaux.
BRUGES CRAFTSMANSHIP
When the Flemish cloth industry lost in
importance in the 15th century, Bruges
concentrated on the production of various
luxury goods. Guilds and, later on, trade
organisations, kept a watchful eye on, and
protected, the creation of these quality
products. Besides panel painting by the
Flemish Primitives, Bruges excelled in the
goldsmith art, the production of illumi-
nated manuscripts, diamond cutting and
lace. Today, the World Heritage city is still
an international centre of refined crafts-
manship. Bruges is a leader in the field of
calligraphy and letter sculpting. More-
over, two reputed colleges train culinary
talent, allowing them to create gastrono-
mic furore in Bruges and overseas. The
capital of chocolate is the obvious place
where you will find the cream of artisan
chocolatiers.

De Schipperskapel
N De "Kapel voor Schippers" is het laatste overgebleven deel van
de vroegere Schippersschool, gebouwd in 1924-1926. Sinds maart
2013 is de kapel de thuisbasis van communicatiebureau Shakalaka!
en de Chapel of Awesomeness, een uniek project dat de functie
van een tentoonstellingsruimte combineert met die van een evene-
mentenlocatie en die tegelijkertijd innovatieve artistieke en zakelij-
ke projecten wil ondersteunen. Een bijzondere locatie voor intieme
culturele en zakelijke evenementen.
F La « Chapelle des bateliers » est tout ce qu’il reste aujourd’hui
de l’ancienne école pour les enfants de bateliers (Schippersschool),
construite entre 1924 et 1926. Depuis mars 2013, la chapelle abrite
l’agence de communication Shakalaka! et le projet Chapel of Aweso-
meness, qui met la chapelle à disposition pour en faire un espace
d’exposition ou évènementiel tout en soutenant divers projets artis-
tiques et commerciaux innovants. Un endroit hors du commun pour
des évènements culturels et professionnels en toute intimité.

“Biekorf”, in het Biekorf-complex waar ook de openbare bibliotheek en
de administratie van het Cultuurcentrum gehuisvest zijn. Het intieme
kader van de zaal vormt de perfecte biotoop voor lezingen.
F Cette salle de théâtre polyvalente de 224 places se trouve à quelque
pas de la Grand-Place (de Markt). Elle convient particulièrement aux
représentations, concerts et séances plénières. Tout proche du parking

lement la bibliothèque publique et l’administration du centre culturel.
