ABOUT THE NOVEL
Three men in a boat published in 1889 is a humorous
account of a boating trip on the river Thames between
two villages Kingston and Oxford. It is based on Jerome
himself(the narrator J.) and two real life friends ,George
Wingrave ( who would become a Senior manager in
Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel ( Harris, the founder
of a London Printing Business) with whom he often
took boating trips.
3. ABOUT THE AUTHOR : - JEROME KLAPKA JEROME (1859-
1927), an English writer and humorist. He was born in
Caldmore, England . His famous contributions are : On
the stage – and off , Idle thoughts of an Idle fellow , etc.
MAJOR CHARACTERS :- Jerome –The writer and narrator is
always concerned about his health. He is a keen
observer of nature and places.
George –He has been portrayed as a lazy fellow who is
only perfect in sleeping.
Harris-He is a happy-go-lucky man who wants to enjoy life
to the brim. He mess of everything.
Montmorency – He is a fox – terrier. The writer gives a
human face to the dog. He is portrayed as clever and a
root cause of most of the mischief.

Late beginning
The narrator was woken up by Mrs.
Poppets, their housekeeper, at
9.00 in the morning. They shouted
at each other for not waking up
sooner. George was woken up
taking off the cloth Harris landed
him one with a slipper whereas
the narrator shouted in his ear.
Finally , hearing the time that it
was quarter to ten, he jumped out
of bed into the bath tub.
5. Unpacking the packed :- The author and his
friends unpacked the luggage to take out
toothbrushes and comb. George wanted
his shaving tackle but the other two
refused.
Montmorency and company:- After dressing they
went downstairs to breakfast.
Montmorency had invited two other
dogs to see him off and they were
fighting on the doorstep. The narrator
calmed them with an umbrella.
6. AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE
At the breakfast table , Harris enjoyed the
breakfast a lot. George got hold of the paper
and read out the boating fatalities, and the
weather forecast which predicated rain,
occasional thunderstorm , wind but the
narrator was convinced that it was a fraud.
He remembers and autumn holiday which
was spoiled because he paid attention to
the weather report. The narrator also says
that the barometre was misleading and
useless as a it would predict the opposite.
After reading the report George sneaked a
ciggrate and went away.
7. WAITING FOR THE CAB
The friends had a good deal of luggage and were
waiting outside their house for a cab .The street boys
came and showed their interest in the friends. Biggs's
boys came first . Biggs was the author’s greengrocer
and was uncivilized and unprincipled. Rumor was that,
they were involved in the Great Coram street murder.
He came around the three friends, then – the grocer’s
boy, a young man from boot shop and the empty- can
superintendent from “ The Blue Post “ took their
position on the curb. Many other parties also
gathered. Everyone made guesses about where they
were going –some said it was Harris’s wedding or the
author’s brother funeral. At last ,an empty cab came
and they went to the Waterloo Station.
8. AT THE STATION
Nobody was sure about the departure of the train.
The porter thought it would come on no. 2 , the
station master was convinced it would start from
the local, the traffic superintendent met a man
who told him it was seen on no.3 but the
authorities on no.3 said it was not the train to
Kingston. Then , they met the engine driver, and
bribed him to take the train to Kingston. They
reached Kingston where a boat was waiting for
them just below the bridge. They shot on to the
river in a boat.
