3. Coffee Seedling Business Proposal 3
Project’s Name
International Coffee Seedling Farming Project in Africa - Uganda
Geographic Location
Bombo, Kampala, Uganda
Company Name
Montanna Fria Coffee Company
Introduction
The selected country in which this business is to be done is Uganda, Africa. It was
preferred because there are ready customers for the product in question which are coffee
seedlings. Most people in the country rely on coffee farming for their economic survival (Daily
Monitor, 2014). Currently there are firms that deal in the production of coffee seedlings in the
country and sell them to the farmers in question. However, apart from the aft that they do this on
a small scale, the techniques that they use are arguably obsolete. This project seeks to provide
high quality seedlings to the farmers to boost their prospects of having highly productive coffee
plants in the end. This project also intends to augment the local stocks of coffee by providing an
affordable and reliable source of coffee seedlings to farmers. This it intends to do through
integrated techniques of culturing, growth and vending of the seedlings to achieve mutual benefit
to the farmers and the association.
Problem to Be Solved by Project
Coffee farming in Uganda acts as the main commercial agricultural activity for export
purposes alongside tea and pyrethrum. Tea and pyrethrum have a shorter life span than coffee
which takes up to years to mature. This has significantly discouraged its cultivation and as a
result has remained underdeveloped. From our research we conclusively found out that there
were more tea farmers than there are for coffee in almost every cash crop growing regions. This

applies for both Robusta and Arabica coffee. As a consequence, the availability of the coffee
seedlings has faced shortages where farmers have actually been reported complaining as
documented in New Vision (2012). Farmers have been witnessed growing their own seedlings
due to lack of the due specialization that coffee seedling care requires; this was witnessed to only
be done on a rather smaller scale. There are some farmers who were also noted culturing these
seedlings but their number is not convincing enough and thereby leaving adequate room for an
extra player in the industry (Muwonge, 2012). Economically the project is bound to have a
significant impact as it is expected to foster international trade through augmented levels of
exports.
Purpose
This project intends to augment the local stocks of coffee by providing an affordable and
reliable source of coffee seedlings to farmers. This it intends to do through integrated techniques
of culturing, growth and vending of the seedlings to achieve mutual benefit to the farmers and
the association.
Project Objectives
1. Provision of an affordable source of seedlings to coffee farmers
2. Provision of reliable supply of coffee seedlings to coffee farmers
3. Revenue source for expansion into future agricultural ventures
Schedule
The project consists of four main phases each of which stands as a milestone on its own.
These four phases are phase one, phase two, phase three, and phase four. Phases one is

independent while phases two, three and four coincide due to activities that stretch beyond the
limits of a phase. These are narrated for in detail below.
Phase One
This phase is the first in the project. It mainly deals with the preparation for the project.
Activities included hereunder are land and preliminaries, organization of workforce, preparation
of site, purchase of materials and equipment, transportation of materials and equipment, and
installation of equipment.
Land and preliminaries activities will seek to establish ownership or control of the land.
The land has already been booked for USD 150 and is currently being cleared awaiting the
verdict on this proposal. After the land has been confirmed as officially hired, formal soil testing
will be done.
Organization of workforce. This will be handled concurrently with the first activity. This
step seeks to establish an organizational hierarchy with regards to the project.
Phase Two
The second phase begins with a four day exercise of preparation of the seeds. The
preparation of the seeds will then be followed by the planting exercise (Muwonge, 2012). Both
of these procedures shall be done on site in seed beds. There are mandatory steps for the
successful nurturing of coffee seedlings which will be provided to the ones who will be directly
involved in the process. Watering and care will hence begin as from the time the planting
exercise is concluded. This phase is however coinciding with the next which begins emergence
of the seedlings which is projected to be 2 months after planting.

Phase Three
This phase is characterized by the emergence of the seedlings from the ground. It is
estimated to be on 27/10/2016. This was suggested to be handled as a milestone since it serves to
confirm that the project is still on track and that achievement of the set objectives is still
realizable. Watering and care (the activity from the previous phase) still continues to this stage
without any alterations. Shifts at care of the tender sprouting plants are handled still by group
members with some little assistance from hired labor of mostly women.
Phase Four
This is the final phase to the project and consists of sales and marketing components.
This will be steered by the sales and marketing team through their wide knowledge and academic
qualification in Business. This is the main revenue collection phase and is expected to last as
long as the seedlings are still in the seedbeds or seed bags. Marketing will however be started
before the previous phase ends in order to ensure ready market for the seedlings once they are
ready. Considering the market trends and forces of demand and supply, the sales should take no
longer than four months. It is still in this phase that purchase of other seeds is expected to be
done for a repeat of the process.
Budget
The total budget for the project is estimated to be about USD 10,000 for the start. The
breakdown of the individual values of cost items is given below
Item Cost
Chemicals $ 500.00
Fuel $ 500.00
Land Hiring $ 1,500.00
7. Coffee Seedling Business Proposal 7
Management Expenses $ 900.00
Monitoring and Evaluation $ 600.00
Payroll Expenses $ 3,000.00
Sales and Marketing Expenses $ 400.00
Equipment $ 1,200.00
Seedling Bags $ 200.00
Seeds and Plants Purchases $ 600.00
Stationery $ 300.00
Utilities $ 200.00
$ 9,900.00
Expected Revenues
The project will deal with the sale of seedlings. Estimates indicate that the project will be
able to produce a total of 1,000 as from the fifth month of operation. One seedling goes for USD
5 but our project will price them at USD 4 as a competitive strategy. The implication is that the
project will give USD 4,000 per month. Considering the initial cash outlay of USD 9,900, it is
expected that the project should recoup the amount within three months of sales.
Conclusion
This project business proposal has provided information to suggest that the coffee
seedlings production project in Uganda is feasible due to several factors. The weather conditions
in the target area are viable. The demand for the product in question is readily available both
locally and internationally. The company has enough finances to push through with the scale of
this business venture. Profit-wise, the business promises to recoup the initial cash outlay in less
than a year. For this reason, the business seems to be quite attractive and should therefore be
pursued.
