Radical Islam
What happens when you hear these words “Radical Islam”? The word triggers images of
terrorist activities and organizations such as ISIS or Al-Qaeda, but a deeper analysis of the term
and its beginning reveals a different story. Through this article we attempt to provide a brief
history of the term “Radical Islam” from a non-religious perspective.
The term ‘Radical” dates back to 18th century, back when it used to mean ‘revolutionary’ or
‘reformist’. The word ‘Islam’ is from the year 570 and as per Wikipedia definition is an
Abrahamic monotheistic religion teaching that there is only one God and with over 1.8 billion
followers, it is the 2nd largest religion.
When compared to this the term ‘Radical Islam’ has fairly modern roots. The first reference to
this word appeared in the New York Jewish Weekly under the title Carter pushes Sadat to
demand West Bank link, Jackson says, published in January 1979. The then U.S. Senator Henry
Martin Jackson was quoted as referring Ayotallah’s “anti-Christian, anti-Jewish, anti-
Bahai” rhetoric as “radical Islam.”
By the dawn of August 1979, Radical Islam began being associated with violence and death.
During the 1984 Vice-presidential debates between George Bush and Geraldine Ferraro,
political officials defined Radical Islam a synonym to international terrorism and global threat.
Radical Islam branded by Khomeini religion represented a threat which Bush addressed during
the debate stating the importance of association with Arab States.
Soon Radical Islam began to spread its wings in different geographical territories and reports of
its perceived influence began cropping up from Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
Year on year reports started pouring in from Libya and Syria in 1986, Egypt in 1987 and Algeria
in 1988. Few years later in 1990, an article ‘Egypt: Success and Uncertainties’ unmasked the
extent of human rights violation by the Egyptian government, reflects the perceived threat
posed by radical Islam.
It wasn’t too late that Anti Semitic stepped its foot on American soil. An article was published in
Wall Street Journal in 1993 about Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, the same year he was convicted
for World Trade Center bombings.
Today, Radical Islam is a hot topic in every government’s agenda. Former presidential candidate
Senator Marco Rubio questioned the former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton upon refraining
from using the word Radical Islam. In another similar incident, the then U.S. President Obama
was criticized by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for not making any reference
to Radical Islam when describing the tragedy of mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
The debate concerning the use of the word Radical divide is along partisan lines, meaning that
the way political parties speak of Islam affects the public’s understanding of the term.
So it’s clear that the term Radical Islam can have different meanings. To some it could trigger
association with terrorism and to others it could just be another dictionary words. To sum up,
radical Islam has evolved significantly since its inception in 1979 being described as
unconventional or extreme. We have seen how it has modified the course of history and has
affected the social lives of people all over the world.
