a. Remove the axle housing.
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

1. Remove plates (1), brake discs (2), and brake hub (4) from the brake cylinder assembly.
Remove dowels (3).
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
2. Remove bolts (10), washers (9), bushing (8), and spacer (7). Remove bolts (16), retainers
(15), springs (14), springs (13), and bushings (12), as an assembly. Use a suitable pry bar
and remove brake piston (6) from brake cylinder assembly (11). Remove O-ring seals (5)
from brake piston (6). Repeat this step for the opposite side.
3. Remove bolts (17) from brake cylinder assembly (11).

Note: Before you remove brake cylinder assembly (11), make location marks for
installation purposes.
4. Remove brake cylinder assembly (11).
5. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for the opposite side.
6. Remove the differential and bevel gear assembly (18) from the bevel gear side of the center
housing.
7. Remove bolt (20) and retainer (19). Use Tooling (A) to remove spanner nut (22). If
necessary, remove bearing cup (21) from brake cylinder assembly (11). Repeat this step for
the opposite side.

8. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove bearing cone (23).

9. Lock the differential in a vise. Remove bolts (24) and bevel gear (25) from the differential.

10. Use Tooling (B) to remove bearing cone (26).
11. Remove collar (28), pins (27), and the seals.

12. Remove cover (29), thrust washer (30), and side gear (32). Use a suitable punch and a
hammer in order to drive out locking pins (31). Remove planetary shafts (33).
13. Remove thrust washers (34), gears (35), spider (36), side gear (38), and thrust washer (37).

14. Remove bolts (40) and remove brake assembly (39) as a unit. Straighten the locking tab
from nut (41).
15. Use Tooling (C) in order to hold brake disc (42) and remove nut (41) (not shown).

16. Remove washer (44), O-ring seal (43), and brake disc (42).
17. Remove lip seal (45) from the center housing.

18. Tap the end of pinion shaft (46) with a soft hammer in order to remove pinion shaft (46)
from the center housing.
19. Remove bearing cone (48), washers (49), and collapsible spacer (47) from pinion shaft (46).
Discard collapsible spacer (47).

20. Use Tooling (D) and a suitable press in order to remove bearing cone (50) from pinion shaft
(46). Remove the shim that is positioned under bearing cone (50). Check the shim for wear.
If necessary, replace the shim.

21. Remove bolts (66), cover (65), and O-ring seal (64).
22. Remove piston (63) from cover (65). Remove O-ring seals (62) from piston (63).
23. Remove retaining ring (61), bushing (60), and spring (59) from rod (55).
24. Remove bolts (51), cover (52), O-ring seal (53), spring (54), and washer (56) from the
center housing.
25. Remove rod (55) from fork (58). Remove retaining ring (57) from rod (55). Remove fork
(58) from the center housing.
26. Use a suitable hammer and a punch in order to remove bearing cups (67) from the center
housing.

System Pressure - Release
SMCS - 4250-553-PX; 4300-553-PX; 5050-553-PX
Release Procedure
1. Park on a level surface. If you must park on a grade, chock the machine.
2. Apply the service brake in order to stop the machine. Move the transmission control to the
NEUTRAL position.
3. Move the speed control lever to the LOW IDLE position.
4. Engage the parking brake.
5. Engage the transmission neutral lock.
6. Lower all attachments to the ground.
7. Stop the engine.
8. Turn the engine start switch key to OFF position for 4 seconds.
9. Turn the engine start switch key back to ON position without starting the engine.
10. Press the hydraulic shutoff switch to the ON position.
11. Operate all hydraulic controls through all positions in order to relieve hydraulic pressure.
Repeat this step until all hydraulic pressure is released.
12. Move the hydraulic control levers to the HOLD position.
13. Turn the engine start switch to OFF position and remove the key.

Solenoid Valve (Transmission) - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
1. Remove bolts (2), plate (3), and floor mat (1).

2. Remove bolts (4) and position floorplate (5) to the side.
3. Cut cable straps (8). Disconnect harness assemblies (7). Remove the four plugs and bolts
(6). Remove solenoid valve (9). Repeat for the remaining solenoid valves.
Installation Procedure
1. Install solenoid valve (9) in the reverse order of removal.
a. Tighten bolts (6) in a crisscross pattern to a torque of 1 N·m (9 lb in). Retorque bolts
(6) to a final torque of 8 N·m (71 lb in).

1. Connect the lock for the boom. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Boom Lock".
2. Connect the lock for the swing boom. Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Swing Lock
Pin Control".
3. Connect the lock for the extendable stick. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
"Extendable Stick Lock Control ".

4. Lower the bucket to the ground. Place the control for the bucket into the FLOAT position.
5. Use Tooling (B) to raise the front of the machine. Position two of Tooling (A) under the
front of the machine.
6. Raise the machine so that the machine is level and 1270 mm (50.0 inch) off the floor.
Position two of Tooling (C) under the rear of the machine.
7. Drain the transmission. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Transmission Oil -
Change" for the correct draining procedure.

8. Use two people in order to remove guard assembly (2). The weight of guard assembly (2) is
approximately 32 kg (70 lb). Remove bolts (1) and guard assembly (2).
9. Remove the piston pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Piston Pump
(Main Hydraulic) - Remove and Install".
10. Remove the front drive shaft if applicable. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual,
"Drive Shaft (Front) - Remove and Install".
11. Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Drive Shaft
(Rear) - Remove and Install".
12. Disconnect harness assembly (3).
13. Disconnect hose assembly (4).

14. Disconnect harness assembly (6). Remove bolt (7) and reposition shift rod assembly (5) out
of the way.
15. Remove bolt (8) that retains the transmission filler tube.
16. Disconnect hose assembly (9).
17. Loosen clamp (10) and disconnect hose (11).

18. Remove transmission oil filter (12) in order to remove the bell housing bolts.
19. Loosen clamp (13) and disconnect hose (14).
20. Remove bolts (16) and cover (15).
21. Rotate the flywheel in order to access bolts (17). Remove bolts (17).

22. Reinstall cover (15) and bolts (16).
23. Attach Tooling (F) to transmission (20).

24. Install Tooling (D), Tooling (E), and Tooling (G) in order to support engine (18).
25. With engine (18) and transmission (20) supported remove the nuts, the washers, and bolts
(19).
26. Remove bolts (21) and the washers from transmission (20).
27. Place a suitable cable strap (22) around drive plate (23) for the converter.

28. Use Tooling (F) in order to remove transmission (20). The weight of transmission (20) is
approximately 255 kg (562 lb).
29. Cut cable straps (26).
30. Disconnect connector assembly (24), connector assembly (25), connector assembly (27),
and connector assemblies (28). Remove the harness assembly from the transmission.
