The observation phase: searching for clues in verses, the passage and study books accordingly to discover basic information. This phase is meant to gather raw information so the student will have evidence to then interpret. Hence, girl looking for clues.
The interpretation phase: using the information that was gathered in observation, the student is to think through how God intended the pieces to fit and begin to appropriate them. The guy has a red line above him indicating he is figuring this out.
The generalization phase: find the ‘big idea’ of the passage and respectively place its complimentary or supportive parts into a concise proposition statement. This will be the central though that the student will teach around. A light bulb typically symbolizes that a person has an idea.
The application phase: from the big idea there will be something that is to be either: taught, rebuked, corrected or trained. Applying that something will equip a person for different life experiences; just as the hiker is equipped for a hike.
The implementation phase: once equipped, God will eventually challenge a person with what they learned. People ought to have a decisive plan when they encounter this challenge so they will no longer be held down, but set free – like the butterfly. Also, a butterfly indicates maturity; growth from a caterpillar.
