When it comes to remodeling, painting your ceiling is something that is often overlooked. Many people leave it a neutral color. While textured ceilings should probably be left to professionals because they must be painted with a paint sprayer, a drywall ceiling is easy enough to do yourself. Perfect Painting & Remodeling: How to Give Your Ceiling a Top-notch Paint Job
When it comes to remodeling, painting your ceiling is something that is often overlooked. Many people
leave it a neutral color. While textured ceilings should probably be left to professionals because they
must be painted with a paint sprayer, a drywall ceiling is easy enough to do yourself. Below are the steps
Perfect Painting & Remodeling takes, and you can take, to make your ceiling look new.
Step 1: Plan and Prep
Before you even start, come up with a budget and figure out what color you want to paint your ceiling.
This may seem obvious, but you want to make sure you can spend enough money to get quality
supplies. Picking out a color is another very important part of this step. You don't want to get paint on
your ceiling only to find out that you didn't really like that color after all.
You should purchase these items if you don't already have them:
A ladder
Paint (flat paint is suggested because of its viscosity)
Primer
Spackle and putty knife for holes (if needed)
Caulk and caulking gun for cracks (if needed)
Thick-knap paint roller (important for a smooth paint job)
Paint roller extension
Painter's tape

After gathering all the necessary supplies, you will want to move all the furniture out of the painting
room. This makes it much easier to keep paint off of valuable things and also makes it physically easier
to paint because you don't have to worry about obstacles. In some situations, this may be difficult due
to the size of your homeand setting of your furniture. Do as much as you can and cover everything else.
Canvas drop cloths are suggested, however if you're doing this on a tight budget, you can use a plastic
one. You will just have to be a little more careful.
Step 2: Masking
Before you start, you will want to cover any moldings and trim with painter's masking tape. Also tape
the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. The objective of this is to keep the wet paint where it
belongs.
2. Step 3: Prime
Do not skip this step. People sometimes skip it as a way to save on effort or money, but priming your
ceiling is very important to making the paint look good. Priming helps paint stick to the ceiling and
ensures that you only have to use one coat of paint.
Step 4: Paint Cut-lines
Using a paintbrush, paint a 2-3 inch cutline all around the ceiling where the corner meets the wall. An
angled brush may be helpful for this step.
Step 5: Paint
Now for the final, largest step. You will want to paint your ceiling with the roller while your cut lines are
still wet. If they dry, a distinct line will be visible from where you cut line ended and where you painted
with your roller. You should start by painting a zigzag pattern that is about four inches square. This part
doesn't have to be super smooth or well blended. After you have covered your entire ceiling with
zigzags and the paint is still wet, you will want to go over the ceiling again but this time with long
straight strokes. Make sure that the edge of the roller is not leaving lines of paint. This step is to make
sure the paint on your ceiling is flat and doesn't have any noticeable lines in it.
Step 6: Enjoy
That's it. You're done. You are the proud owner of a newly painted ceiling.
