Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. Nhóm đối tượng có nguy cơ bị rối loạn
mỡ máu
Bệnh mỡ máu cao thực chất là tình trạng rối loạn chuyển hóa lipid máu, nguyên nhân
có thể là tiên phát (do di truyền) hoặc thứ phát do các bệnh khác. Sự rối loạn này bao
gồm: tăng loại lipoprotein có phân tử lượng thấp (LDL-c), giảm loại có phân tử lượng
cao (DHL-c), tăng Triglycerid, sự thay đổi này đồng thời làm cho Cholesterol toàn phần
tăng, cho nên có tên gọi là bệnh mỡ máu cao.
Các nhóm đối tượng có nguy cơ bị rối loạn mỡ máu gồm:
1. Nhóm đối tượng thừa cân, béo phì, hút thuốc lá, uống nhiều rượu, ăn nhiều
thức ăn có chứa chất béo sẽ làm tăng lượng triglycerid trong máu là những đối tượng
có nguy cơ cao mắc bệnh mỡ máu cao ( rối loạn mỡ máu). Người gầy nhưng nếu có
chế độ ăn uống không lành mạnh: sử dụng rượu bia, hút thuốc, ăn nhiều nội tạng động
vật cũng có khả năng mắc bệnh máu nhiễm mỡ.
Cholesterol được sản xuất ở gan (khoảng 80%) từ các a-xít béo bổ xung từ thực phẩm
hoặc từ các khâu chuyển hóa khác và 20% là cung cấp trực tiếp từ những thức ăn có
hàm lượng chlesterol cao như: mỡ động vật, thịt có màu đỏ (thịt bò, thịt lợn), tôm, lòng
lợn, lòng bò, óc, trứng, dầu dừa (là dầu thực vật nhưng lại có nhiều acid béo bão hòa).
Ở nhóm đối tượng này do có thói quen ăn uống vô độ, lượng a-xít béo (Nguyên liệu để
sản xuất cholesterol) cũng như cholesterol được đưa vào cơ thể quá nhiều, làm tăng
quá trình thấm vào màng trong của động mạch mặc dù đôi khi nồng độ LDL-c chưa
phải là ở mức cao.
Việc điều chỉnh chế độ ăn uống theo hướng giảm thực phẩm có chứa nhiều cholesterol
và tập thể dục thường xuyên có hiệu quả tốt ngăn chặn bệnh rối loạn mỡ máu.
2. 2. Nhóm đối tượng mắc các bệnh đái tháo đường, hội chứng thận hư, suy tuyến
giáp, bệnh gan mãn: Ở nhóm này, việc điều trị tích cực, kiểm soát tốt các triệu chứng
và biến chứng có tác động tốt đến sự rối loạn mỡ máu.
- Ở bệnh đái tháo đường: Đái tháo đường là bệnh rối loạn chuyển hóa carbohydrat
(đường), có kèm theo rối loạn chuyển hóa lipid (mỡ) và protein (đạm). Trong cơ thể
sinh vật sống sự chuyển hóa đường - đạm - mỡ có mối liên quan mật thiết tương hỗ với
nhau. Sự rối loạn chuyển hóa lâu dài của một chất đều kéo theo sự rối loạn chuyển hóa
của 2 chất còn lại. Ở trường hợp này, sự rối loạn chuyển hóa lipid thường là suy thoái
và giảm tất cả các loại lipoproten trong máu, nhưng đôi khi các loại khác giảm nhưng
LDL-c lại không giảm, hoặc tăng nên gây ra bệnh rối loạn mỡ máu.
- Ở hội chứng thận hư: Hội chứng thận hư là một hội chứng lâm sàng và sinh hóa,
được đặc trưng bởi phù, protein niệu (protein trong nước tiểu) cao, protein máu giảm,
rối loạn lipid máu và có thể đái ra lipid, do nhiều tình trạng bệnh lý khác nhau gây nên.
Ở đây rối loạn mỡ máu là một triệu chứng của hội chứng thận hư.
- Trong bệnh suy tuyến giáp: Tuyến giáp sản xuất hormon tuyến giáp không đầy đủ gây
nên tổn thương các mô và các rối loạn chuyển hóa, trong đó có chuyển hóa lipid. Các
xét nghiệm sinh hóa trong suy giáp thường thấy: thiếu máu, tăng cholesterol, tăng
Triglycerid, Glucoza giảm, natri máu giảm...
3. Nhóm đối tượng bị bệnh mãn tính sử dụng thuốc điều trị lâu dài không đúng
cách: Một số thuốc tim mạch như thuốc ức chế bêta giao cảm, thuốc tránh thai lâu dài,
nghiện rượu.
3. - Ở người nghiện rượu: Nghiện rượu là nghiện Ethanol, biểu hiện là lệ thuộc vào các
triệu chứng xuất hiện khi không uống rượu, người nghiện bắt buộc phải uống rượu để
cắt các triệu chứng này.
Ethanol khi có nồng độ cao thường xuyên trong máu gây tổn thương các mô, ethanol
xen vào giữa hai lớp lipid làm giảm thứ tự phân tử của các chuỗi acyl của phospholipid
làm thay đổi cấu trúc màng từ đó làm gia tăng quá trình thấm cholesterol vào màng

rằng mình bị bệnh lâu năm có kinh nghiệm về bệnh.
- Ở người sử dụng thuốc tránh thai lâu dài, do thuốc là tổ hợp các hoóc-môn nội tiết
sinh dục, sử dụng lâu dài thường kèm theo các biến chứng như: tăng sắc tố ở gò má
(nám da), sỏi mật, rối loạn chuyển hóa trong đó có chuyển hóa lipid.
