Hardwood flooring is popular as it has rather warm color, is easy to clean andis also more resistant to damage than many other types of flooring. However, the durability of this kind of flooring durability is not unlimited. HOW TO REPAIR DENTS
There are two main types of dents: compressions and fractures. Compressions
occur when blunt objects hits a floor and compresses or crushes the matrix of
the wood fibers. Fractures on the other hand occur when the fibers are sheared
by a sharp object. Each is repaired differently from the other.
REPAIRING COMPRESSION DENTS
For this process, you’ll need to have a small towel, Iron (preferably one with a
steam setting), matching wood finish and 100 and 220 grit sandpaper.
Instructions:
1. Use the sand paper to smoothen the finish of the dents and the areas
around it. When done, take the towel and dip in water and then place it
directly over the dent to cover only the exact areas that you want to
repair. Avoid leaving the towel on the floor for long periods of time
since this can ruin the finish that’s left.
2. Take the iron and heat it to the 'cotton' setting. Place on over the towel,
gently moving it over the dent (do this in a circular motion) .Be sure to
press the iron’s steam button at the same time. The iron will produce
steam that will cause the expansion of the wood in the dents, making the
dents to disappear.
3. Apply heat for a few minutes and then remove the iron .Check the
dents. If the fibers of the wood have risen but are not yet all flat, repeat
2
3. the whole process until they are at their initial level. Leave the floor for a
day or so to dry.
4. Once the dents are gone, the surrounding wood might be rough because
of the steam. Use the sandpaper to remove all rough areas where the
dents were. You may want to start with the 100 paper and then use the
220 when your floor feels smooth.
5. On the sanded areas, apply a finish that matches the initial finish and
leave it to dry (if the floor had a stained finish). Sand the repair once
more with 400 grit sandpaper to ensure that the floor surface matches
the original.
6. If the floor was sealed, you may also want to apply a sealant .Allow it to
dry for a day or according to the manufacturer’s directions.
HOW TO REPAIR FRACTURE DENTS
If your floor has fracture dents, follow these tips to repair them:
Clean of debris and residue on the dents like as burn marks or splinters.
Fill the dents with wax, lacquer lay-in, epoxy, inlay-veneer or any other
durable substance. Sand the area with a grit sand paper so that it
becomes smooth.
Apply the appropriate color that matches that of the floor. For this, you
can hand paint, airbrush or use touchup markers.
