Patient assessment is a critical EMT skill that is tested in NYS EMT-B certification exams. The exam assesses both medical and trauma patient assessments through skill stations that simulate real-world scenarios. Candidates have 10 minutes to conduct a full patient assessment, including scene size-up, primary assessment, and verbalizing treatments for any conditions found. Examiners provide additional clinical information not observable and candidates can direct simulated EMT partners to assist with treatments. The skill sheet is used to evaluate candidates' performance on the key components of patient assessment.
