Sodium cyanide is a compound produced by reacting hydrogen cyanide gas with sodium hydroxide. It is commonly used in mining to extract metals like gold from ore. The global capacity for sodium cyanide was over 1.2 million metric tons in 2018, and demand is projected to grow 4.1% annually through 2022. Prices for sodium cyanide contracts are set based on production costs, including feedstock and conversion in the manufacturing process.
