3. • Hydrazine hydrate is a raw material with extensive applications, such
as - Water treatment: oxygen scavenger, protection of boiler circuits,
synthesis of flocculants and coagulants; - Agrochemicals:
phytosanitary synthesis intermediates; - Pharmaceuticals: bioactive
synthesis intermediates; - Polymerisation and blowing agents (major
product is azodicarbonamide): acrylics, PE, PVC, EVA, rubber, etc.; -
Processes and chemical applications: synthesis intermediates,
treatment processes, precious metal purification.
• The raw materials used in this plant are caustic soda solution,
chlorine, ammonia, acetone, steam, nitrogen, natural gas, water and
air. Typical Hydrazine Hydrate dilutions include the following grades:
100%, 85%, 80%, 60% and 54.7%. Lower strength grades may also be
produced.
4. How is hydrazine
hydrate made?
For most uses, hydrazine is
produced as hydrazine
hydrate in a formulation
with water. The hydrate may
be produced commercially
by three methods:
the Raschig process, the
ketazine process, and the
peroxide process. ... The
resulting ketazine is then
hydrolyzed to hydrazine.

7. The peroxide-ketazine-based hydrazine hydrate technology
The increasing demand of current world production for hydrazine hydrate emphasizes the need to
focus on the techno-economic analysis of the existing technologies.
• Three processes, namely the Raschig process, urea process, and peroxide-ketazine process, are
chosen for technical analysis followed by cost estimation and economic assessment.
• The technical part involves the development of flow sheets, process design, carrying out of
calculations as well as estimation of raw materials, labor, utilities, and process equipment by sizing
and other sub-components.
• The economic part comprises the estimation of working capital, fixed capital investment, total
capital investment, and total production costs.
• Economic parameters like net profits, rate of return, payback period, and break-even point are also
estimated to perform economic analysis.
• The results obtained from technical analysis and economical feasibility studies show that the
peroxide-ketazine-based hydrazine hydrate technology has clear advantages in terms of raw
material consumption and economic competitiveness.

10. Applications
• As rocket fuel in space application.
• As energy source in fuel cells.
• As blowing agent in plastic industry.
• In boilers-used as oxygen scavenger for boiler
feed water in energy industry.
• Prevention of corrosion in boilers by formation
of a magnetite corrosion "shield" in boiler
surface.
• In synthesis of organic nitrogen compounds
which are very useful intermediates in drugs 7
pharmaceutical industries.
• In making herbicides & pesticides in agro-
industry.
